Representatives from the project management board of Vietnam Petroleum Power Corporation (PV Power) stated that this is the first time the project has generated electricity for the national grid, marking the beginning of the testing phase. The Nhon Trach 3 power plant is expected to begin commercial operation in July.
According to the project management board, the Nhon Trach 3 and 4 power plant project is located in the Ong Keo Industrial Park (Phuoc Khanh commune, Nhon Trach district, Dong Nai province) and is invested by PV Power.
Previously, in March 2022, PV Power signed an EPC contract with the Samsung C&T + Lilama consortium. The project is currently in the construction and installation phase.
By the end of January 2025, the project's progress had reached nearly 96% of its total volume.
Many components of the plant have been tested and put into operation, such as: the 220kV distribution yard system supplying power to the plant, the main transformer system and the plant's auxiliary transformers, the water treatment system, the compressed air system, the wastewater treatment system, etc.
At the end of January, the Nhon Trach 3 power plant completed its no-load operation test at 3,000 rpm to check the conditions for the first synchronization.
Specifically, the Nhon Trach 4 power plant is planned to have its first firing in April 2025 and begin commercial operation in October 2025.
The Nhon Trach 3 and 4 power plant project is the first power plant project in Vietnam to use liquefied natural gas (LNG), with a total capacity of 1,500-1,600MW and a total investment of 1.4 billion USD.
This is also the only project among the 13 LNG power plant projects in the Power Development Plan VIII that is currently under construction.

According to the project management board, the issues regarding land lease contracts and industrial park infrastructure usage fees have now been resolved.
These two power plants, once commercially operational, will add approximately 9 billion kWh of electricity per year, contributing to national energy security, realizing the net zero target, and promoting the development of gas-fired power projects in Vietnam according to the Power Development Plan VIII.
According to the leaders of the Dong Nai Provincial People's Committee, the two projects, once operational, will not only address energy security issues for the region and the nation but also contribute thousands of billions of VND to the provincial budget.
In the coming period, Dong Nai province will continue to work alongside businesses to ensure the project achieves maximum effectiveness.
