Resolution 72-NQ/TW of the Politburo on some breakthrough solutions to strengthen the protection, care, and improvement of people's health is being actively implemented in Dong Nai province.

In Hung Phuoc border commune, joy and excitement were evident on the faces of the ethnic minority people as medical teams visited each hamlet to conduct health check-ups.

On-site medical care

In early December, a team of medical staff from Hung Phuoc commune health station braved the rough roads to reach area 134 in Muoi Mau hamlet to administer vaccinations and conduct health checkups for children.

Many parents, bringing their children for their first health check-up and vaccination, could not hide their emotion and trust in the healthcare sector as well as the new two-tiered local government model.

Present at the vaccination session, village elder Dieu Re of Muoi Mau hamlet shared that it was extremely meaningful for the villagers to receive vaccinations from the Hung Phuoc commune health station staff. He had gone from house to house, encouraging each person to bring their children for full vaccination. He only hoped that his children and grandchildren would be healthy and free from illness in the future.

Muoi Mau Hamlet is home to a large proportion of the S'tieng and Khmer ethnic minorities. Life is still difficult, so healthcare is often overlooked by the local people.

“Previously, parents paid very little attention to vaccinating their children. Today, witnessing the staff from Hung Phuoc commune health station coming to the hamlet to administer vaccinations, I am truly delighted and sincerely thank the staff,” said village elder Dieu Re.

In the hamlet, there are still some households that have not fully vaccinated their children. Therefore, village elder Dieu Re continues to promote and encourage people to ensure their children receive all necessary vaccinations to prevent future illnesses.

To date, thanks to the efforts of the village elders and local authorities, the villagers have gradually agreed to bring their children for check-ups and vaccinations as instructed by the commune's health station.

Ms. Thi Tham, a mother of two children who received their first full vaccinations right in the hamlet, shared: "I am truly grateful to the Health Station. I am both happy and excited. Before, the roads were difficult to travel on, so I didn't have the means to take my children to get vaccinated. Now, with the Party, the State, and the Health Station showing concern by bringing the vaccinations right to my doorstep, I am very pleased. I only hope my children and grandchildren will be healthy so that their parents can work with peace of mind."

As for Ms. Kim Thi Sa Roi, after being persuaded and educated by the village elder, she promised to change her habits and take her children for check-ups and treatment more often. Taking her child for vaccination for the first time, Ms. Sa Roi became even more aware of the importance of disease prevention and protecting her child's health.

"Before, I lacked knowledge about healthcare. Thanks to the efforts of the uncles and aunts, I learned how important vaccinations are to prevent my child from getting sick. Now, whenever there's a check-up or vaccination, I take my child there immediately," shared Ms. Sa Roi.

Changing perceptions and habits about healthcare.

Hung Phuoc commune was established by merging the former Hung Phuoc and Phuoc Thien communes, and is home to 16 ethnic groups. The ethnic minority communities are concentrated in sub-area 134 of Muoi Mau hamlet, and in Bu Tam and Phuoc Tien hamlets.

Over the past period, the positive changes in healthcare awareness cannot be overlooked, thanks to the role of the teachers in the hamlet. Ms. Nong Thi Dan is one of the teachers from Hung Phuoc Kindergarten who teaches at school point 134 in Muoi Mau hamlet.

Although she has been involved in the education sector for over 15 years, this is the first year she has been assigned to work in this hamlet. Since the beginning of the year, Ms. Dan has clearly witnessed the indifference of many parents towards their children's health.

When the school year began, many ethnic minority students here had never even been vaccinated, and their limited Vietnamese language skills, as well as those of their parents, made outreach efforts difficult.

Ms. Nong Thi Dan said: "The children here are so pitiful; many of them are often sick because they haven't received all the necessary vaccinations. Therefore, I have also dedicated time to coordinating with the hamlet committee and village elders to regularly visit each house to encourage and explain to the people the importance of vaccination."

Despite the difficulties, seeing the children get examined, vaccinated, and become healthier is now the motivation for her to continue her dedication to the children in this border region.

According to Dr. Bui Thi Thu Lieu, Head of Hung Phuoc Health Station, the awareness of primary healthcare among ethnic minorities in the area has been limited in recent times. However, the station regularly conducts awareness campaigns and encourages people to adopt a persistent and gradual approach.

The staff of the commune's health station directly go to each village and hamlet to bring health to the people, persistently carrying out reproductive health care, child health care, and disease prevention and control.

Dr. Bui Thi Thu Lieu said: "In the work of preventing and controlling dengue fever, every weekend the doctors and nurses at the station get together to guide the local people. Gradually, the people have become familiar with and more aware of taking care of their own health."

This is the greatest joy for doctors and medical staff: receiving trust and seeing very clear changes in people's awareness.

For example, last time, when Dr. Thu Lieu went to vaccinate, only about 10 babies were brought to the vaccination site, but this time the number has increased to several dozen.

According to Mr. Vo Anh Kiet, Vice Chairman of the People's Committee of Hung Phuoc commune, the locality is a border commune with 12 hamlets, of which Muoi Mau hamlet is one of the hamlets with a very large ethnic minority population.

Therefore, implementing activities such as health check-ups, care, awareness campaigns, vaccinations, and medical examinations and treatment, especially care for pregnant women, faces many difficulties.

The biggest obstacle in ethnic minority areas remains changing the perceptions and habits of the local people.

“The locality has its own orientation for ethnic minority hamlets. In the coming time, the commune will continue to disseminate information through all forms of integration to reach the people in the most practical way. The goal is to ensure that people understand the local policies and especially the healthcare work according to Resolution 72 of the Politburo that has just been issued,” Mr. Vo Anh Kiet emphasized.

Over the past period, the coordinated efforts of the government, the health sector, and the education sector, along with the principle of "slow and steady wins the race," have brought about positive changes in Hung Phuoc border commune.

From being indifferent, ethnic minority communities now trust and proactively bring their children for vaccinations and medical check-ups.

The people's trust has been and continues to be the driving force for the locality to effectively implement Resolution 72, kindling hope for a healthy and sustainably developing community in the border region of Dong Nai./.
