On April 2nd, the Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism of Can Tho City held a press conference to provide information about the 11th Southern Traditional Cake Festival, which will be held at Binh Thuy District Square from April 17th to 21st.
According to the organizers, the highlight of this year's festival is the first-ever demonstration and free serving of a record-breaking Vietnamese pancake (banh xeo) with a diameter of 3 meters.
A pancake measuring 2 meters in diameter was featured at the Cai Rang Floating Market Cultural Tourism Festival in 2017.
According to Ms. Dao Thi Thanh Thuy, Deputy Director of the Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism of Can Tho , 14 chefs will work together to make this giant Vietnamese pancake (scheduled for April 18th) and will then cut and share it free of charge with visitors attending the festival.
Artisan Hong Nhung, the main person in charge of the performance of making the giant Vietnamese pancake, added that there will be difficulties during the process, but they will try their best to complete a pancake that is true to the Western Vietnamese style.
According to her, authentic Western-style banh xeo (Vietnamese savory pancake) will be crispy at the edges, with a generous amount of batter in the center, ensuring a satisfyingly full meal.
Leaders of the Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism provided information about the 11th Southern Vietnam Traditional Cake Festival.
Mr. Nguyen Minh Tuan, Director of the Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism of Can Tho City, added that this year's festival has a scale of about 250 exhibition booths, featuring about 100 types of traditional cakes along with many other attractive regional specialties and products.
In addition to showcasing and demonstrating the cake-making techniques of artisans, the 2024 Southern Vietnam Traditional Cake Festival also features a space introducing the National Intangible Cultural Heritage of Thuan Hung rice paper making (Thot Not district, Can Tho city).
