Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Pham Thu Hang
At the regular press conference of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on the afternoon of September 25, answering a reporter's question about Vietnam's reaction to the United States' refusal to recognize the equivalent of 12 Vietnamese seafood exploitation occupations, Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Pham Thu Hang said:
On September 15, Vietnamese Minister of Industry and Trade Nguyen Hong Dien sent a letter to the US Secretary of Commerce requesting the US Department of Commerce and the US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration to reconsider their decision to refuse to recognize the equivalence of 12 Vietnamese seafood fishing occupations under the US Marine Mammal Protection Act in order to avoid serious disruptions to bilateral trade and protect the livelihoods of hundreds of thousands of Vietnamese fishermen and workers.
In recent times, under the direction of the Government and with the support of localities, the Vietnamese seafood industry has made efforts to modernize, improve responsibility and strengthen fisheries management.
In the coming time, on the basis of the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership between Vietnam and the United States, Vietnam is willing to work with the US side to resolve existing obstacles and continue to promote fair and sustainable bilateral trade cooperation, ensuring the legitimate interests of fishermen and businesses of the two countries, the Spokesperson emphasized./.
