DNVN - In front of dozens of Vietnamese female entrepreneurs at the headquarters of Sao Thai Duong Joint Stock Company on May 17, General Director Ngozi Okonjo Iweala said that the WTO will strive to build capacity and empower Vietnamese female entrepreneurs, helping women-owned enterprises develop steadily and "knock on the door" of new markets.

On May 17, the Trade Promotion Agency ( Ministry of Industry and Trade ) in collaboration with the SheTrades Project Office in Vietnam and the Pioneering Women Leaders Network (WeLead) organized the "Meeting and dialogue between Ms. Ngozi Okonjo Iweala - Director General of the World Trade Organization (WTO) with Vietnamese female entrepreneurs" within the framework of her working trip to Vietnam.

Mr. Vu Ba Phu - Director of the Trade Promotion Agency (Ministry of Industry and Trade) said that since joining the WTO (in 2007) up to now, the benefits from trade liberalization and open-door policies under WTO agreements have promoted the strong development of Vietnam's economy in recent times. Ms. Nguyen Thi Tuyet Minh - Founder and President of WeLead shared that the meeting is an opportunity for Vietnamese female entrepreneurs to be updated on information about WTO activities, WTO programs in coordination with Vietnam to promote and support female-owned enterprises to participate in international trade; at the same time, to be consulted on issues that Vietnamese female entrepreneurs are interested in. Thereby, helping female-owned enterprises overcome challenges not only in the international market but also in the domestic market.

Sharing with more than 50 Vietnamese female entrepreneurs, WTO Director General Ngozi Okonjo Iweala said that Vietnam has 26 million female workers, making it one of the top 15 countries with the largest proportion of female workers.

Since Vietnam joined the WTO (2007), there has been a lot of progress in the economy and trade. Vietnam has had many reforms in the past 2 decades, increasing GDP 4 times, trade 7 times. And the development of Vietnam through exporting goods to the world must mention the role of female entrepreneurs. Vietnam is a great example for other developing countries.

Ms. Ngozi Okonjo Iweala affirmed that the WTO can intervene to help women-owned businesses develop sustainably through trade regulations to ensure fairness, transparency and predictability in global trade.

"For example, when exporting goods to a certain country, the product will be subject to any kind of tariff from the importing country. However, if there is an agreement with the WTO, it will ensure that trade regulations are stable, knowing what regulations will be in place when importing into that market," said the WTO Director-General.

Among them, Sao Thai Duong Joint Stock Company (Sao Thai Duong) is one of the pioneering businesses leading the trend of inclusive business in Vietnam.

Ms. Nguyen Thi Huong Lien - Co-founder, Deputy General Director of Sao Thai Duong, Vice President of Welead shared: "Sao Thai Duong is honored to be chosen as the host for this important dialogue event. We wish to convey to the head of the WTO the spirit of Vietnamese female entrepreneurs, the way Vietnamese female entrepreneurs face challenges and gradually overcome them.

During the exchange session, Vietnamese female entrepreneurs asked the WTO Director General many questions such as how to balance work and ensure family happiness, and what support programs the WTO will have in the future for Vietnamese businesses owned by women. These businesses all expressed their desire to improve their knowledge, build capacity, develop and expand domestic and foreign markets.

Regarding the question of how to effectively approach foreign markets, the WTO Director General advised female business owners that when targeting a certain market, they should try to thoroughly understand the market's requirements. Only with thorough research will investment activities be successful.

For example, when targeting the European market, business owners must master the technical regulations and tariff barriers they impose in order to overcome them. Only when everything is ready should they invest.
