Shooting on New York street, 3 people injured and dead

A suspect has been detained, according to the New York Police Department.

The shooting took place at 11:30 a.m. local time Saturday, leaving the 86-year-old man with multiple gunshot wounds. He was taken to hospital but died.

About a mile away and less than 10 minutes later, a 63-year-old man was shot in the shoulder and taken to a nearby hospital. Police said his condition was serious but stable.

Minutes later, the gunman shot and wounded a 61-year-old man. The victim is in critical condition and being treated at Jamaica Hospital Medical Center.

Police said there was another shooting nearby, but it was unclear whether it was related to the three incidents.

The spokesman could not provide further details, including any information about the man in custody or the gunman's motive. Investigators are still trying to determine what prompted the shooting.
