New car prices continuously decrease, Jimny buyers "lose" nearly 200 million VND after 1 year

(Dan Tri Newspaper) - Suzuki Jimny has been continuously offered with significant discounts in recent months, which has affected the resale price of this model in the used car market.

In February, Suzuki Vietnam increased its promotions for the Jimny model, offering a 50% discount on registration fees, equivalent to 40 million VND, along with a 20 million VND cash bonus. With a total reduction of up to 60 million VND, the price of this model was lowered from 789 million VND to 729 million VND.

In fact, this price has been applied at dealerships for the past few months. With the two-tone exterior color option, customers still have to pay an additional 10 million VND.

The continuous price reductions on new cars have led to significant depreciation of the Suzuki Jimny in the used car market. According to an investigation by a reporter from Dan Tri newspaper, a 2024 registered Jimny with approximately 10,000 km on the odometer is being offered for sale at 750 million VND by a used car showroom in Ha Tinh .

Notably, when it was first launched in Vietnam in 2024, the Suzuki Jimny was sold at inflated prices of up to 50 million VND at many dealerships. This situation lasted for nearly half a year, and it wasn't until early August 2024 that the model was sold at its listed price.

With a suggested retail price comparable to a C-segment SUV like the Mazda CX-5 (from 729 million VND), the Suzuki Jimny's features are quite basic, even inferior to many B-segment cars on the market (Photo: Nguyen Lam).

When the Suzuki Jimny was first launched, buyers had to pay a total of approximately 940 million VND, after adding all fees. If they wanted to resell it after one year of use, at the price of 750 million VND as mentioned above, the owner would lose up to 190 million VND; this amount would be enough to buy a small electric car like the Wuling Mini EV (starting from 197 million VND).

However, the target customer base for the Suzuki Jimny is quite specific, as the product is positioned as a "fun-loving vehicle." Most people who choose the Jimny are those who prefer an off-road style, or are looking for a small car with the potential for customization and personalization.

Therefore, the Suzuki Jimny rarely appears on the used car market, partly due to the relatively low sales volume in Vietnam. According to statistics, a total of 437 Jimny units were sold in 2024.
