(Dan Tri Newspaper) - This number is lower than last year, however, pressure remains high as the number of grounded aircraft accounts for more than 12% of the commercial fleet, not to mention that we are currently in the peak travel season at the end of the year.

According to information from the Vietnam Civil Aviation Authority, as of December 15th, the Vietnamese aviation fleet totaled 262 aircraft, including 235 fixed-wing aircraft and 27 helicopters, an increase of 13 compared to 2024. Of these, 213 aircraft are used for commercial aviation and 49 for general aviation.

28 aircraft from various airlines remain grounded due to engine shortages.

Despite continued expansion, the entire industry is under significant pressure as 28 aircraft are grounded due to engine shortages, representing 13.1% of the commercial fleet (28/213).

Over the past year, the Vietnamese aviation industry has faced several challenges related to a decrease in its aircraft fleet due to the impact of engine supply issues from the PW manufacturing plant and the negative effects of ongoing political instability and military conflicts around the world.

Specifically, on November 28, the European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) issued an emergency flight eligibility directive regarding software updates or replacements of the altitude and direction control computer (ELAC), affecting 84 out of 167 A320/1 aircraft in Vietnam.

In addition, this year has seen numerous storms, fog, and strong convective clouds in the key airport area, causing temporary disruptions and putting significant pressure on aviation operations.

Despite facing numerous challenges, the total number of incidents per 1,000 flights this year remains stable, at a level similar to 2024 (approximately 0.958).

Aviation is experiencing double-digit growth.

Currently, Vietnam's aviation industry is recovering strongly. Last year, the operations of Vietnamese airlines continued to grow, with passenger transport volume increasing compared to 2024, specifically a 6.7% increase in passenger transport and a 4.6% increase in cargo transport compared to the same period in 2024.

International passenger traffic reached 46.9 million passengers, an increase of 13.3% compared to 2024; Vietnamese airlines transported 19.4 million passengers, an increase of 5.2% compared to 2024 and accounting for 41.4% of international passenger traffic. Domestic passenger traffic reached 36.6 million passengers, an increase of 7.5% compared to 2024.

International cargo volume reached 1.3 million tons, a 24.6% increase compared to 2024. Vietnamese airlines transported 240,200 tons, an 11.2% increase compared to 2024, accounting for 18.5% of international cargo volume.

Domestic freight volume reached 224,000 tons, a decrease of 1.7% compared to 2024.

Currently, the airline maintains nearly 50 domestic routes connecting Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City with 20 airports nationwide. On the international network, Vietnamese airlines operate 113 routes to 24 countries and territories; while foreign airlines from 30 countries operate 142 regular routes to Vietnam.

On the afternoon of December 10th, at the 10th session of the 15th National Assembly , the Law on Aviation of Vietnam (replacing the previous one) was passed and will take effect from July 1st, 2026, marking an important step in completing the legal framework for Vietnam's aviation industry.

This will serve as the basis for developing and issuing national aviation safety and security programs, and for implementing aviation safety programs.
