The heartbreaking story of Nguyen Ngoc Tam, a student in class 12A2 at Nguyen Hue High School, residing in Ward 9, Phuoc Hoi Commune, La Gi Town, is deeply moving for anyone who hears it.

A series of unfortunate events befell the boy from the age of three.

When she was three years old, her father died in a traffic accident. Tam lived with her mother until she was seven, when her mother left her with her paternal grandparents and remarried. From that day on, she was practically an orphan, having lost both her father and mother. She lived off the poverty alleviation benefits provided by her grandparents.

When I was eight years old, for reasons I don't know, I was moved to live with my great-grandparents. Although they were poor, they took very good care of me.

Then, an unexpected accident struck when a barrel of gasoline exploded, breaking both my legs and causing blurred vision in both eyes. I was rushed to the hospital, but my legs still have lingering effects, being bent and quite weak.

Just when she thought the misfortunes that befell her were enough, tragedy struck again. When Tâm was 12 years old, her grandparents passed away one after another, leaving her alone amidst a life of hardship.

After a period of living alone, her paternal uncle took her in and continued to support her education. However, her uncle worked as a construction worker and her aunt as a seamstress, both with unstable incomes and having to support two children through school, so the family was struggling. Her uncle could only help with two meals a day; Tâm had to pay for all her tuition herself.

Tam often skipped breakfast. During the days of studying for the 12th grade exams, she had to study until noon, sometimes feeling extremely hungry and dizzy, but she still had to try to endure it.

Understanding her situation, the teachers and the school are always willing to help by waiving or reducing her tuition fees. Besides attending classes, Tam takes advantage of opportunities to work part-time at various jobs such as helping out at restaurants and cafes to earn money to buy school supplies, books, and gas for transportation.

Breakthrough through learning

Tam said that the after-effects of an accident in her childhood made it difficult for her to make a living through strenuous labor. The only way to change her life was through education. Therefore, she threw herself into studying whenever she could.

Thanks to this, Tam achieved quite high results throughout all three years of high school: she ranked first in her class for six semesters and was an all-around excellent student, with an average GPA of 8.9 for the three years. In the second semester of 11th grade, she ranked first in her entire grade level with an average GPA of 9.1.

In the recent high school graduation exam, Tam achieved an average score of 8.76 and 22.5 points for university admission. She was admitted to the E-commerce major at the Ho Chi Minh City University of Water Resources.

Upon receiving the news of her university acceptance, Tam said that before the joy could even fully sink in, tears streamed down her face. The question, "Where will the money for tuition come from?" kept echoing in her head.

Speaking about Nguyen Ngoc Tam, her homeroom teacher in class 12 A2, Nguyen Thi Nhan, said: "Tam's situation is truly special. Her father passed away, her mother remarried and moved far away, and she lives with her great-grandparents, who have also passed away, so she is currently the only one listed on the household registration. She was taken in and raised by her uncle."

I studied while also working part-time to cover my living expenses. I was always a top student, the best in my grade. The teachers at school always helped me with many of my contributions.

"This year I'm starting university, and the tuition fees are much higher. I don't know where I'll get the money to pay them. If I have to drop out, it would be a terrible thing for me."

Ngoc Tam said: “I always tell myself that no matter how difficult it is, I must try my best to study until the end. Only then can I repay the kindness of my family and the support of many teachers over the years. I said I only hope to have a little money to pay the initial tuition fee and I will be determined to work part-time to save money for my studies.”

All contributions should be sent to account number 1024309506, Vietcombank , account holder Nguyen Ngoc Tam.
