The traditional bamboo and rattan craft village cooperative in Bui hamlet, Nhan Nghia commune (Lac Son) creates jobs for many local women.
Ms. Quach Thi Dung, Director of the Cooperative of the traditional bamboo and rattan craft village of Bui hamlet, said: "In the past, when bamboo and rattan products had not really become commodities, households made baskets, betel boxes, trays... for use in family life, or sold in small quantities, as an exchange item at markets. In modern society, when industrial products flood the market, many customers turn to handmade products as a cultural quintessence of the nation. Realizing that this product has great consumption potential, and can take advantage of the time during the off-season, without having to spend money, women only need to receive raw materials, make and pay according to the product. When the cooperative was established, it attracted more and more participants, creating regular jobs."
Established in 2020, the Bui hamlet traditional rattan and bamboo craft cooperative specializes in producing and trading hand-woven rattan and bamboo products, starting with more than 10 members who still preserve and are attached to the profession. Up to now, the cooperative has more than 100 members, all of whom are women in the commune, creating stable jobs, and at the same time creating jobs for 100 seasonal workers with an income of 2.5 - 3 million VND/person/month. The products are diverse in design, guaranteed quality, mainly handmade. The cooperative receives many orders from provinces, cities and abroad such as China and Japan.
Although not the main occupation, only done during the off-season, bamboo and rattan weaving brings a significant source of income to many local workers, especially poor households without many means of production. On average, each month, members of the cooperative produce 4,000 - 5,000 products with 15 types of items, including baskets, betel boxes, trays, trays... made from bamboo, rattan and environmentally friendly materials. The products are ordered by companies in Hanoi and many provinces, with regular purchase contracts, and stable output. Many women from poor households with limited labor capacity have had income and improved their lives after joining the cooperative. In addition, core members of the cooperative are also granted vocational training certificates, continue to teach rattan and bamboo weaving training classes, thereby contributing to preserving and maintaining traditional crafts for their homeland.
Ms. Quach Thi Lan, a member of the cooperative, said: "I have been learning and making rattan and bamboo products since 2022. In addition to farming time, I receive raw materials from the cooperative to make, increasing my family's income. The rattan and bamboo weaving profession brings in significant income, improves life, and has monthly savings."
The raw materials are mainly imported by the cooperative from partners and regional suppliers. To meet the quality requirements set by the purchasing unit, the raw materials must be carefully selected. In addition to ingenuity, it also requires diligence, meticulousness, creativity, updating and learning many new designs to create diverse, quality, aesthetic products that meet market demand. Therefore, the cooperative members are always active in consulting, exchanging experiences, creating many new designs to apply, gradually improving the skills of the members, gradually building product brands, enhancing reputation, and expanding the market.
Comrade Bui Van Dat, Chairman of Van Nghia Commune People's Committee said: "The traditional bamboo and rattan craft village cooperative in Bui hamlet has been operating effectively and stably for many years. In addition to the units that are signing purchasing contracts, the commune is also actively looking for more units to consume products to ensure stable output. At the same time, it creates conditions to organize training courses, improve skills, expand production scale, create more jobs, increase income for workers, especially poor households, contributing to local economic development".
