Mr. Nguyen Xuan Khang, Chairman of the Board of Marie Curie School ( Hanoi ) said that in recent days, while following the tragic news of the flash flood in Lang Nu (Phuc Khanh, Bao Yen, Lao Cai), listening to the stories of children who suddenly lost their parents or only had one parent, he could not help but feel sad and wanted to do something.
“I think we need to make it up to the children,” that thought kept urging him. Right at that moment, the teacher from Hanoi thought that what he could do was to “adopt” all the lucky children who survived, so that they could be warm, well-fed and have a good education.
After that, he asked the government and the education department to make a list of children aged 15 and under who survived the flash flood. Teacher Khang and Marie Curie School decided to "adopt" the children's education until they were 18 years old, by providing 3 million VND/child/month, transferred directly to their parents or guardians.
When he could not have a complete list, he decided to immediately support the cases he had grasped. Among them was Nguyen Van Hanh, a 12th grade student at Bao Yen High School No. 1. After the flood swept through Lang Nu, Hanh was left alone in the world. Through Vice Principal Nguyen Thi Hong, Mr. Khang was able to connect with Hanh by phone.
Over the phone, Mr. Khang asked about Hanh’s health and family. When he learned that Hanh no longer wanted to go to school and would go to work to earn a living because of his uncertain future, Mr. Khang said: “You are one year older than my youngest grandchild. So, will you agree to let me accept you as my grandchild?” Hanh choked up with tears: “Yes, sir.”
Teacher Khang also pledged to “support” Hanh’s education every month, 3 million VND per month. When he needed more, Hanh could tell “grandpa”. At the same time, he asked the Vice Principal to open a bank account for Hanh so that he could deposit money into it every month. He also asked her to help buy Hanh a phone, and he would send her money back so that the grandfather and grandchild could talk to each other occasionally.
In response to his “grandfather’s” kindness, Hanh promised to study hard to graduate from high school, and would report his future plans to him at the end of the school year. In place of his parents, Ms. Hong - Vice Principal and Ms. Thuy - homeroom teacher will also take turns taking care of Hanh.
Teacher Khang said he felt heartbroken when looking at the list of students who were swept away by the flood. “The project to feed the children and students of Lang Nu after the flash flood” is what he wants to make up for, so that the future of the children who were lucky enough to survive but suffered a lot of damage will no longer be bleak.
Nu Village is the place that just experienced a terrible flash flood that almost wiped out the entire village on the morning of September 10. The landslide from the Elephant Mountains buried 40 houses, killing 52 people, leaving 14 missing and 15 injured. Currently, the number of students who died after the flash flood is 13.
Previously in February, Mr. Nguyen Xuan Khang spent 100 billion VND to build a school for the people of Meo Vac - a poor border district of Ha Giang province. Marie Curie School Hanoi was founded by Mr. Nguyen Xuan Khang in 1992, 32 years ago. Mr. Khang is the sole investor. This is a famous school in Hanoi. |
