30 countries want to join BRICS, not excluding the admission of Western countries

The new geopolitical situation has sparked interest in the BRICS group of emerging economies. Currently, around 30 countries want to join the group.

Georgiy Toloraya, executive director of the Russian National Committee for BRICS Studies, shared this information with Sputnik news agency.

Mr. Toloraya emphasized: “Frankly, the new BRICS members have given the association a boost. After its first decade of existence, the group began to gain momentum and reached what is called stability.”

The new geopolitical situation, the beginning of open conflict between the West and parts of the non-Western world, has sparked interest in BRICS to the point that many countries want to join.

According to Mr. Toloraya, there are currently 30 countries lining up to join the group.

He argued: “Currently speaking on behalf of the global majority, BRICS must now begin to transform itself into a platform for creating a new global economic and political system.”

Therefore, despite the fact that BRICS was formed as a counterweight to the West, the organization cannot be considered an anti-Western alliance.

"In principle, BRICS does not rule out the admission of Western countries, but they must abide by the association's specific conditions, as members, not as a dominant force," he asserted.

BRICS was founded in 2009 with five countries: Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa.

In January 2024, Iran, Egypt, Ethiopia, and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) joined the group.
