“Unfortunately, Pakistani forces attacked Afghanistan in Spin Boldak city, Kandahar border province. We had to respond,” said Taliban government spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid.

In contrast, Pakistani Prime Minister Mosharraf Zaidi's spokesman accused: "Taliban government forces have just fired unprovoked artillery along the border. Pakistan immediately responded appropriately and strongly."

According to local residents, the fighting started at 10:30 p.m. and lasted about two hours. Ali Mohammed Haqmal, head of the Kandahar Information Service, said Pakistan used both light and heavy artillery, stressing that shells had hit civilian homes. Neither side has yet released information on casualties.

This is the latest development in a series of escalating tensions between the two countries. Conflict broke out in early October after a Pakistani airstrike on the capital Kabul and Taliban responses along the border.

Despite a ceasefire agreement reached in Qatar on October 19, bilateral talks have stalled. The latest round of talks in Saudi Arabia last weekend failed to produce a breakthrough. Both sides have warned of the risk of renewed fighting if talks fail.
