Eating grapes reduces the risk of type 2 diabetes

VnExpressVnExpress09/06/2023

Grapes are rich in antioxidants and plant flavonoids that fight free radicals, inflammation, and conditions that cause type 2 diabetes.

A study by the Harvard School of Public Health (USA) on more than 190,000 healthy adults showed that eating grapes (without peeling) can help reduce the risk of type 2 diabetes. Researchers say that fruits such as grapes or blueberries are rich in fiber, antioxidants and phytochemicals that have anti-inflammatory effects. Chronic, long-term inflammation is associated with diseases including heart disease, diabetes, cancer and arthritis. Therefore, grapes are effective in preventing and reducing the risk of diabetes.

Research from the University of Bari Medical School (Italy) shows that polyphenols in red grapes can fight inflammation, act as antioxidants, reduce cellular oxidative stress and block inflammatory compounds, which are cytokines that cause chronic diseases such as obesity and type 2 diabetes. Polyphenols are plant compounds that also protect the body from environmental damage such as ultraviolet rays, free radicals and temperature.

According to information from the University of Illinois (USA), dark grapes are rich in anthocyanin pigment, a flavonoid (plant intermediate metabolite) with antioxidant properties that help fight inflammation, a condition that causes type 2 diabetes. In addition, this fruit has an average glycemic load (GL=11) that does not increase blood sugar. If eaten in moderation, it also helps control blood sugar levels.

According to the Mayo Clinic (USA), compounds are antioxidants found in plants including grapes that help the body fight free radicals, which are molecules that accumulate in the body when exposed to harmful substances such as cigarette smoke, radiation, etc. If there are too many free radicals, it will cause oxidative stress, a condition related to various diseases such as heart disease, diabetes and Alzheimer's disease. In addition, red grapes contain the compound resveratrol, which supports the immune system, cardiovascular health and prevents certain types of cancer.

According to the US Department of Agriculture , each cup of seedless grapes provides nearly 1.5 grams of fiber and 288 mg of healthy potassium. You can use grapes in desserts, salads, sauces, toasted grape bread... to take advantage of the effects of this fruit.
