Some people find the caffeine content in coffee too strong, while others simply dislike its taste.

But in reality, there are many other caffeinated drinks to choose from. Below are five caffeinated drinks that can help you stay awake besides coffee.

Matcha

Matcha is a type of green tea powder, traditionally used as a powder to make matcha tea, but it can also be added to drinks like lattes and smoothies. A cup of matcha with 2g of matcha powder will contain between 37.8mg and 88.7mg of caffeine.

Thanks to its high L-theanine amino acid content, matcha is considered a suitable and easy-to-drink option. Matcha is also a rich source of the antioxidant epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG), which has cell-protective and anti-inflammatory effects in the body.

Matcha has a grassy, earthy flavor and is delicious served hot or iced. It can be enjoyed with fresh milk and honey.

Black tea

Although made from the same plant as green tea, black tea has a darker color and a richer flavor. This is because black tea leaves are exposed to air until they darken, altering their color and taste.

On average, each cup of black tea contains about 47mg of caffeine, which is approximately half the amount of caffeine found in a cup of coffee.

Black tea also provides L-theanine, which has a calming effect on the body. Black tea is also rich in protective compounds such as theaflavin and thearubigin, which support cognitive health and may protect against chronic diseases such as heart disease.

The flavor of black tea is very diverse, often described as malty, fruity, or smoky. Black tea can be enjoyed with honey and milk or as a refreshing iced tea.

Green tea

Green tea leaves are harvested from tea bushes grown in full sunlight and not shaded before harvesting. This gives the tea leaves a richer, slightly more bitter flavor compared to matcha.

Green tea contains approximately 29.4mg of caffeine per cup. Although not as high as matcha, green tea is also a good source of L-theanine.

Combined with its low caffeine content, this makes green tea perfect for those who want a milder "awakening drink." Green tea also contains many antioxidants, such as EGCG and other catechins, which help support and protect overall health.

Green tea has a grassy and slightly sweet taste. It can be enjoyed neat, with added sugar, or with a squeeze of lemon.

Guayusa Tea

Guayusa, also known as runa tea, is made from the leaves of an evergreen tree native to the Amazon, where it has been used by indigenous communities as an herbal tea for centuries. Guayusa extract is an ingredient in several natural energy drinks.

Guayusa is rich in natural caffeine and also contains L-theanine, which helps promote calm energy and focus without causing restlessness. It's a great option for those who want a caffeine boost but dislike or can't tolerate coffee. Guayusa also provides antioxidants like chlorogenic acid, which support overall health.

Guayusa has a mild, subtly sweet flavor. Besides energy drinks made from the guayusa plant, you can also find guayusa leaf tea, which can be enjoyed on its own or blended with other herbs like mint or with a squeeze of lemon.

Yerba Mate Tea

Yerba Mate is a type of tea made from the leaves of the yerba mate plant. It is a traditional drink in South American countries such as Argentina, Brazil, and Chile. A cup of yerba mate tea contains approximately 80mg of caffeine.

This type of tea contains theobromine, a stimulant that provides a milder and longer-lasting alertness than caffeine.

Tea also contains many protective antioxidants, such as chlorogenic acid. Yerba Maté has an earthy, slightly bitter taste. It can be enjoyed hot, with or without sweetener, or iced with a squeeze of lemon.
