Unexpected incidents from seemingly harmless habits
A Chinese tourist was left with a 160,000 yuan (US$24,000) compensation bill after a rare incident at a hotel in Tokyo, Japan. The cause was a very common action: conveniently hanging a shirt hanger on a device mounted on the ceiling of the room.
The device was a sprinkler head for the automatic fire suppression system. This action accidentally broke the extremely sensitive "glass ball" inside, causing the system to be activated immediately. A large amount of water sprayed out, flooding the entire room and affecting two floors of the hotel.

Compensation levels and negotiation process
Although the hotel staff quickly turned off the water valve, the damage was still very serious. After taking inventory, the hotel sent a compensation bill that included the cost of cleaning, drying, replacing new carpets, repairing damaged electrical equipment and furniture.
Under Japanese law, hotels have the right to claim compensation if they can prove that the damage was caused by the guest's negligence. However, they must also provide full evidence and detailed invoices. Currently, the two sides are negotiating through legal channels to resolve the case. The tourist can file a lawsuit or request the authorities to intervene if they feel the compensation is unreasonable.
Why are fire sprinklers so sensitive?
Fire protection experts explain that automatic sprinklers are designed to react extremely quickly to the risk of fire. Inside each sprinkler is a glass bulb filled with a special liquid that expands rapidly when exposed to high temperatures, causing the bulb to burst and spray water.
However, this glass ball is also very fragile if there is a mechanical collision or is affected by even a small hanging force. An expert warned: "This is a safety device, not a clothes hanger. Hanging the wrong thing here is like asking for trouble."

Not an isolated case
This is not the first time a similar incident has occurred. Previously, in Guiyang City, Guizhou Province, China, a tourist also hung clothes on the fire sprinkler head, causing water to flood the room. In this case, the hotel requested 2,000 yuan (about 7.4 million VND) in compensation, although the actual damage was estimated at 20,000 yuan (about 74 million VND).
The incident in Tokyo is attracting a lot of attention on Chinese social media. Many people think this is a "costly lesson" for those who have the habit of being careless when staying at hotels. Images of the fire sprinklers are widely shared as an important reminder for the travel community.
