An unexpected incident stemming from a seemingly harmless habit.
A Chinese tourist faced a compensation bill of 160,000 yuan (over 591 million VND) after an unusual incident at a hotel in Tokyo, Japan. The cause stemmed from a very common action: casually hanging a shirt on a device mounted on the ceiling of the room.
The device in question was the sprinkler head of an automatic fire suppression system. This action inadvertently shattered the highly sensitive "glass sphere" inside, causing the system to activate immediately. A large volume of water gushed out, flooding the entire room and affecting two floors of the hotel.

Compensation amount and negotiation process
Although hotel staff quickly shut off the water, the damage was still extensive. After an assessment, the hotel issued a compensation invoice covering cleaning, drying, carpet replacement, and repairs to damaged electrical equipment and furniture.
According to Japanese law, the hotel has the right to claim compensation if it can prove the damage was caused by the guest's negligence. However, they must also provide complete evidence and detailed invoices. Currently, both parties are negotiating through legal channels to resolve the case. The tourist can file a lawsuit or request intervention from authorities if they feel the compensation offered is unreasonable.
Why are fire sprinkler heads so sensitive?
Fire safety experts explain that automatic sprinkler heads are designed to react extremely quickly to fire hazards. Inside each sprinkler head is a glass bulb containing a special liquid that expands significantly when exposed to high temperatures, causing the bulb to burst and spray water.
However, this glass ball is also very fragile and easily broken by mechanical impact or even a small hanging force. One expert warned: "This is a safety device, not a clothes hanger. Hanging the wrong thing on it is like inviting trouble."

This is not an isolated case.
This is not the first time a similar incident has occurred. Previously, in Guiyang City, Guizhou Province, China, a tourist also hung clothes on a fire sprinkler head, causing water to flood the room. In that case, the hotel demanded 2,000 RMB (approximately 7.4 million VND) in compensation, even though the actual damage was estimated at 20,000 RMB (approximately 74 million VND).
The incident in Tokyo is attracting significant attention on Chinese social media. Many believe it serves as a "costly lesson" for those who tend to be careless when staying in hotels. Images of the fire sprinkler heads are being widely shared as an important reminder for the travel community.
