According to statistics from the Vietnam National Tourism Administration, the Khmer Times reported that Cambodian tourists are currently the fastest-growing segment of the Vietnamese tourism market.
With a 338% increase in the first half of this year compared to the same period in 2019 (before the pandemic), Cambodian tourists have achieved the largest growth among international tourist markets in Vietnam's post-Covid-19 recovery phase.
The second fastest-growing tourist market after Cambodia is India, with a 236% increase. Laos ranks third in tourist growth with 117%, followed by Thailand (108%) and Singapore (107%).
Cambodian tourists love the beach destinations in Vietnam.
Vietnam's tourism services, including visa-free entry for up to one month for citizens of Thailand, Singapore, Indonesia, Cambodia, and Laos, have made Vietnam a major attraction for tourists from Southeast Asia.
Meanwhile, the strong growth in Indian tourists is due to an increase in the number of direct flights between Indian cities and Vietnam.
Meanwhile, Chinese tourists, Vietnam's largest source market before the pandemic, increased by 22% following the Chinese government 's decision to resume group tours to Vietnam two months ago. In the first half of this year, Vietnam welcomed over 5.5 million tourists, reaching 69% of its 2023 target of 8 million.
South Korea had the highest number of visitors to Vietnam with over 1.6 million, accounting for 28%. China ranked second with 557,000, followed by the United States with 374,000.
The newspaper reported that the central coastal city of Da Nang , the ancient town of Hoi An, Da Lat, Nha Trang, Vung Tau, and the "paradise island" of Phu Quoc are among the top favorite destinations in Vietnam for Cambodian tourists. Many Cambodians also frequently travel to Vietnam for medical treatment.
The manager in charge of the outbound department of a travel company in Phnom Penh affirmed that Vietnam has always been the number one destination for Cambodians.
"I've worked in the tourism industry for over 20 years now and I can tell you that Cambodians are wonderful tourists. If you choose the younger generation, they are unmissable travelers. Of course, overseas tourism hit a low point in the post-pandemic period and is now recovering. However, many Cambodians will continue to explore the world while welcoming tourists from all over the world here with the highest standards of hospitality," he told Khmer Times.
He added that Vietnam and Thailand are the main tourist destinations for Cambodians, but overseas travel is now becoming more diverse with more options thanks to increasing air connections.
According to the Vietnam National Tourism Administration, in the first six months of 2023, five international tourist markets surpassed pre-pandemic levels (first six months of 2019), including Cambodia (up 338%), India (236%), Laos (117%), Thailand (108%), and Singapore (over 107%). In addition, markets recovering to near 2019 levels include the US (95%), Australia (92%), South Korea (77%), the UK (79%), and Germany (84%).
