Traditional costumes of ethnic groups in the province Lang Son is not only a cultural beauty but also contains the quintessence and artistic creativity of each ethnic group. However, over time, traditional ethnic costumes are gradually fading away.

Faced with that reality, all levels and sectors in the province continue to promote the implementation of the Project "Preserving and promoting traditional costumes of ethnic minorities". Vietnam in the present stage" to preserve and promote the cultural identity of ethnic groups.

Lang Son Located at the northeastern gateway of the country, it is a locality with many ethnic groups living together, possessing a diverse cultural treasure, rich in identity, containing many unique features, containing the quintessence and artistic creativity of each ethnic group.

Each costume has its own beauty and meaning, imprinted with the cultural traditions and customs of that ethnic group. The traditional costumes have blended together to create a unique folk art picture of Lang Son. Each ethnic group has its own way of decorating and using costumes according to its own cultural characteristics.

For example, the Tay people have their characteristic indigo color; the Nung Phan Sling people have yellow and banana green embossed lines embroidered colorfully on the collar and hem of their shirts; the Nung Chao people's costumes are embroidered with hidden threads on an indigo background. The costumes of the four Dao groups: Thanh Y, Lu Gang, Lu Dang and Dao Do all have in common the use of bright colors, with different main colors such as: pink, red, orange...; the H'Mong people's costumes are elaborately designed with meticulously embroidered bibs and scarves...

As unique as they are, traditional costumes cannot avoid change and decline. Therefore, in recent years, the provincial authorities have taken many measures to preserve and promote the cultural identity of ethnic groups, including traditional costumes.

Currently, Cao Loc district has more than 90% of the population being ethnic minorities. In the district, there are a number of traditional handicrafts related to ethnic costumes such as: brocade weaving (Hoa Cu commune, Hai Yen); embroidery, sewing ethnic costumes (Cong Son commune, Mau Son, Xuat Le).

Talking to us, Vice Chairman of Cao Loc District People's Committee Nguyen Van Thinh said: In order to raise people's awareness in preserving and promoting traditional costumes, the district has directed agencies, units, communes and towns strengthen information and propaganda and promote traditional national costumes with tourism development and festival organization.

In addition, the People's Committee of Cao Loc district has directed the district Departmentof Education and Training to educate on the preservation and promotion of traditional ethnic costumes integrated into formal education and extracurricular activities. At the same time, schools are encouraged to use traditional costumes instead of school uniforms. Thanks to that, there are 17 schools in the district that maintain students wearing traditional costumes when going to school.

Cao Minh Commune, Trang District is a locality with a large population of H'Mong ethnic people. To preserve traditional cultural identity, including H'Mong costumes, local people are finding many good and effective ways. Ms. Trinh Thi Khen, Khuoi Lam Hamlet, Cao Minh Commune, Trang Dinh District shared: The H'Mong ethnic people in Cao Minh Commune mainly belong to the Black Mong group.

Nowadays, ready-made clothes are sold in large quantities and are beautiful and affordable, so the younger generation is no longer interested in traditional costumes. Seeing this, older people like us are very worried. Meanwhile, in the village, there are only 6 to 7 old people who know how to sew traditional costumes, but they are mainly old and weak, only I can teach them.

To preserve the traditional costumes of our people, since 2020, Cao Minh commune has established the H'Mong ethnic identity and costume restoration club with 20 members. As the head of the club, I have actively taught sewing techniques to my daughter-in-law, grandchildren and club members. Up to now, the children can basically sew and embroider their ethnic costumes...

In 2019, the People's Committee of Lang Son province issued Plan 117/KH-UBND on implementing the Project "Preserving and promoting traditional costumes of Vietnamese ethnic minorities in the current period" in the province with a total estimated cost of about 35.3 billion VND.

Director of Lang Son Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism Nguyen Dang An said: Assigned by the People's Committee of Lang Son province, we have developed an implementation plan, divided into many stages to select, research, preserve and promote traditional costumes of ethnic minorities in the province with typical and unique values. At the same time, we will invest in a focused way to create methods and measures to preserve and promote traditional costumes associated with tourism development to contribute to creating jobs and increasing income for local people.

Accordingly, the preservation of ethnic costumes is divided into 2 phases: from 2019 to 2025 and from 2026 to 2030. In phase 1 from 2019 to present, the Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism has reviewed, inventoried and catalogued intangible cultural heritage of traditional costumes of ethnic minorities; researched and built a database on traditional costumes (filming, taking photos, writing articles); strengthened propaganda work...

From 2020 to present, Lang Son Provincial Museum has inventoried all ethnic costumes in 11/11 districts and cities and conducted 260 surveys on traditional costumes. At the same time, a scientific film on Nung ethnic costumes was created. Lang Son Provincial Tourism Promotion Information Center published over 500 photo books introducing traditional costumes of ethnic minorities in the province.

In districts and cities, the work of preserving and restoring festivals that maintain the wearing of traditional costumes has also been promoted, such as: Hang Pinh Festival (Banh Nuong Festival), Lang Son City; Long Tong Festival in Hai Yen Commune, Cao Loc District; Sli Singing Festival in Tan Thanh Commune, Huu Lung District; Pac Khuong Love Fair in Binh Gia District, etc.

In addition, many tourist destinations have focused on the use of traditional costumes when performing and renting traditional costumes for taking photos. For example, at community tourism villages: Thien Hoa (Binh Gia); Quynh Son, Vu Lang (Bac Son) ...

Or at Ky Lua walking street, Lang Son city, the government encourages people to wear traditional costumes, perform on stage in traditional costumes... Thereby leaving many good impressions on tourists inside and outside the province.
