This debate was organized by CBS News on October 1st. On social media platform X, CBS News stated that it had proposed four debates in September and October between Minnesota Governor Tim Walz and Ohio Senator JD Vance. Walz responded to the invitation to the debate on October 1st, before Harris's campaign team confirmed acceptance of the invitation on that date.

On August 15, Senator Vance stated that he had also accepted an invitation to debate on October 1, and mentioned another invitation from CNN on September 18. Previously, in an interview with Fox News on August 14, Senator Vance confirmed that he wanted to participate in the debate on October 1, but not in a "no audience" format like the debate between Trump and President Joe Biden on June 27. Meanwhile, Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump and his Democratic opponent Kamala Harris will debate on September 10 on ABC News. This will be their first direct confrontation in a campaign that has been described as very close by opinion polls. According to recent opinion polls on voter support, Harris is currently tied with or ahead of Trump in most of the swing states that will decide the outcome of the White House race in early November.
