Previously, on April 10, patient LTĐ. (67 years old), in Phu Thuy commune, Le Thuy district, Quang Binh province, was hospitalized with a large hemangioma on his right cheek, covering and pulling his face and suffering from severe necrosis. Family members had to use a large cotton ball to plug the ruptured area, causing a lot of bleeding under the tumor.
According to her sister, Ms. D. had a tumor on her face since she was 13 years old. For more than 20 years, the tumor has grown rapidly, greatly affecting the health and daily life of this woman. Her family took Ms. D. to many large hospitals in Hue and Hanoi for examination and treatment, but they only helped to stop the bleeding, there was no radical treatment method.
In early April, the family decided to take the patient to the Vietnam-Cuba Friendship Hospital in Dong Hoi for emergency treatment with the mindset of "while there is life, there is hope", even accepting the worst situation.
After receiving the patient, after performing the paraclinical tests, Vietnam-Cuba Friendship Hospital Dong Hoi conducted an interdisciplinary consultation, a hospital-wide consultation, and a multidisciplinary surgical consultation with the participation of leading experts in oncology, maxillofacial surgery, otolaryngology, neurosurgery, diagnostic imaging, anesthesia and resuscitation, biochemistry-hematology and blood transfusion, etc.; especially Associate Professor, Dr. Nguyen Dai Binh, former Deputy Director of K Hospital and Cuban medical experts.
The diagnosis results showed that the patient had a hemangioma in the right temporal cheek, hemorrhagic necrosis/atrial fibrillation, and right bundle branch block. Doctors predicted that this was a serious case with a lot of blood loss, and if not treated promptly, it would affect the patient's life.
Determining that this was a difficult case but there was still a chance, with the determination to save the patient's life, the hospital decided to perform emergency surgery on the patient. After 8 hours of surgery, the doctors tied off the blood vessels, removed the tumor, and reconstructed the giant hemangioma in the right temporal cheek area.

Patient D.'s health is gradually recovering after surgery. |
“The worrying issue is that the patient had to receive 49 units of blood (nearly 3 times the average amount of blood in a normal body) within 8 hours, which can easily lead to dangerous risks and complications. Fortunately, the patient responded well and after 12 days of surgery, he was able to walk normally, the surgical wound healed, and his health gradually stabilized,” added Dr. Nguyen Duc Cuong, Director of the Vietnam-Cuba Friendship Hospital Dong Hoi.
According to the hospital head, the successful surgery recognized the spirit of solidarity and professional concentration of the hospital's medical team, the application of highly specialized techniques and the participation of leading experts in saving the patient's life, successfully performing a difficult and complicated case.
This is an outstanding achievement of the hospital celebrating the 50th anniversary of the liberation of the South and national reunification.
