Nguyen Van Tai continues his journey of surprising victories over strong opponents. He became the first Vietnamese player to participate in the round of 16 of the 2024 World Championship of 3-cushion billiards taking place in Phan Thiet City.
Nguyen Van Tai is the first Vietnamese player to compete in the knockout round (round of 32) of the 2024 World Championship. The player from Binh Thuan (ranked 594th in the world, according to the World Carom Billiards Federation - UMB Events Ranking) faces Takao Miyashita (Japanese, ranked 72nd in the world). Before entering the knockout round, Nguyen Van Tai had an impressive performance in the group stage. Falling into a difficult group with the presence of Berkay Karakurt (Turkey, ranked 16th in the world) and Nikos Polychro (Greece, ranked 15th in the world), the Vietnamese player still played excellently and won convincingly.

In the round of 32, fans expected Nguyen Van Tai, with the advantage of playing at home, to continue to create surprises. Not disappointing the audience, the Vietnamese player and Takao Miyashita contributed to an exciting and emotional match until the last turns. Van Tai won 50-41 after 43 turns. In the opening stage, Van Tai played better and controlled the game. But later on, the player from Binh Thuan lost his rhythm and let his opponent break away, narrowing the score gap. However, when the match entered the final stage, both players were under psychological pressure and could not perform their best shots. Nguyen Van Tai, with the support of the fans, took advantage of the opportunity to reach 50 points first. Nguyen Van Tai is the first player in the Vietnamese billiards team to win a ticket to the round of 16 of the 2024 World Championship. In the match at the same time, Jose Juan Garcia (Colombia) also caused a surprise when he defeated strong opponent Kim Haeng-jik (South Korea, ranked 13th in the world) with a score difference of 50-31. Thus, Nguyen Van Tai will face Garcia in the round of 16 of the 2024 World Billiards Championship. This match will take place on September 28.
