Increased levels of fine dust particles raise doctors' warnings of respiratory health risks.

Fine particulate matter in urban air is contributing to an increase in respiratory illnesses, particularly sinusitis and pharyngitis.

"The current air pollution situation in major cities is becoming a serious threat to public health, especially ear, nose, throat, and respiratory diseases," said Assoc. Prof. Dr. Le Tran Quang Minh, Director of the Ho Chi Minh City Ear, Nose, and Throat Hospital, on the sidelines of the hospital's annual scientific and technical conference held on December 13 in Ho Chi Minh City.

According to Associate Professor Quang Minh, besides pollution from construction, urbanization, and industrialization, another worrying cause is the increase in fine dust in the air .

Many people often confuse fine dust with fog, especially in the early morning. However, that hazy layer of air is actually fine dust pollution, which can penetrate deep into the body through the respiratory system.

Notably, fine dust can contain heavy metal crystals , which directly affect health. When people inhale fine dust for a long time, the immediate risk is diseases such as sinusitis, pharyngitis, and respiratory infections.

From these conditions, patients may develop more serious complications such as middle ear infections, lung disease, and even respiratory tract cancer.

If inflammation and exposure to pollution are prolonged, especially in the presence of heavy metals, the risk of developing ear, nose, throat, and lung cancer increases significantly. This is an issue that needs to be addressed early so that people can raise their awareness of prevention and seek timely medical attention.

In the context of climate change , erratic weather patterns, and increasing environmental pollution, Associate Professor Quang Minh has offered several important recommendations to minimize risks for the community.

First and foremost, from a community perspective, building and protecting a green, clean, and healthy living environment plays a crucial role in safeguarding people's health. In addition, each individual needs to proactively implement preventive measures such as wearing masks when going to public places, crowded areas, or polluted environments to limit the inhalation of fine dust.

Boosting immunity is also a crucial solution. People need to maintain a healthy lifestyle, eat a nutritious diet, get adequate rest, and may use immune-boosting measures as advised by healthcare professionals.

According to experts, the number of ear, nose, and throat (ENT) cases has recently been on the rise due to a combination of factors such as seasonal changes, air pollution, and the aftermath of epidemics that have weakened many people's immune systems. This not only affects the ENT but also increases respiratory illnesses and lung diseases in general.

Doctors recommend that proactive prevention and early check-ups are key to protecting health against the increasingly evident effects of environmental pollution.
