What is the air quality like in Ho Chi Minh City today?

This morning, the sky over Ho Chi Minh City was hazy, and some apps showed that the city's air quality was worse than Hanoi's. What is the reality?

Air quality in Ho Chi Minh City is measured at two stations managed by the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment . One station is located in the city center and the other is located in the former Thu Duc City.

This morning, the sky over Ho Chi Minh City was hazy, with very limited visibility due to a thick layer of smog. Residents continuously shared reports that the air quality in Ho Chi Minh City was severely polluted, surpassing even Hanoi in terms of AQI index.

The AQI index is a combination of six air pollutants, including PM2.5, PM10, Carbon Monoxide, Sulfur Dioxide, Nitrogen Dioxide, and Ozone Layer.

Currently, people mainly access pollution information through the IQair app or its website. This is a source of daily air quality information, but its reliability has not been confirmed.

Air quality monitoring in Ho Chi Minh City is assigned to the monitoring center under the Department of Agriculture and Environment. Information is published on the department's website. However, the current environmental quality information for Ho Chi Minh City on the website only covers up to August 2024.

Another source of official information that people can refer to is the monitoring results from two stations managed by the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment located in Ho Chi Minh City. The data from these two stations is publicly available on the website https://cem.gov.vn/.

According to the latest report, Ho Chi Minh City is currently conducting periodic air quality monitoring with a frequency of 7 consecutive days/month at 36 monitoring locations (24 locations affected by traffic activity, 2 background monitoring locations, 7 locations affected by residential activity, and 3 locations affected by industrial activity). Monitoring is also carried out for parameters such as total suspended particulate matter (TSP), PM10 (sampled continuously for 24 hours), PM2.5 (24 hours), CO, NO2 , SO2 , Benzene ( C6H6 ), and noise – sound level equivalent (LAeq) at three time points: 7: 30-8 :30 AM, 3:00-4:00 PM, and 8:00-9:00 PM.

Regarding the assessment of air quality in the province and city, monitoring results over many years by the Department of Agriculture and Environment and related studies all indicate that air pollution in Ho Chi Minh City is mainly related to dust.

At certain times, the concentrations of total particulate matter (TSP) and fine particulate matter (PM10 and PM2.5) at traffic locations exceeded Vietnamese standards, while other pollution parameters (CO, SO2 , NO2 , benzene, etc.) met Vietnamese standards.

Air quality varies throughout the day and tends to change seasonally (related to traffic density and meteorological factors). Pollution levels are higher during the dry season than the rainy season, with PM2.5 concentrations in the air tending to peak at the end and beginning of the year.

Among the main sources of air pollution in Ho Chi Minh City, road traffic is identified as the primary source. In addition, air quality in the city is also heavily dependent on meteorological factors and influenced by external pollution sources.

In the former Binh Duong area, monitoring data from the observation program shows that air quality before and after the 2020 Environmental Protection Law remained quite good, within permissible standards.

In the former Ba Ria Vung Tau area, the results of the air quality assessment, emission inventory, and mapping of the distribution of concentrations of air pollutants such as CO, NO2 , SO2 , PM2.5, and PM10 are currently below the permissible limits.

The air quality data on the Department of Agriculture and Environment's website is not up-to-date.

A website that checks air quality in Ho Chi Minh City shows that there is pollution today, but it's not as serious as rumored.
