Previously, on June 2, a 35-year-old woman (living in Bien Hoa city, returning to her mother's house in Xuan My commune, Cam My district) was brought to the Medical Center by her family in a state of having just given birth about 10 hours ago. The baby boy weighed 3.3 kg and still had the umbilical cord intact, and the placenta was soaked in salt.
However, the pregnant woman did not agree to be examined and cared for by medical staff. Although the nurse tried to persuade her, she was unsuccessful.
Dr. Ha said she had to meet and talk directly with the mother for about 20 minutes before she agreed to cut the umbilical cord, clean and examine the baby.
After examination, the doctors diagnosed that the newborn had signs of pneumonia, rapid breathing, and wheezing and needed to be hospitalized for monitoring and treatment. However, the mother firmly refused and signed a commitment not to be hospitalized, then took her baby home.
According to her family, this was her fourth birth. The first two were in the hospital, and the last two were at home. Although her family advised her to go to a medical facility for a safe birth, she still chose to give birth at home in a “natural” way.
Doctor Ha warns that giving birth at home using the “natural” method has many potential risks, which can lead to dangerous complications for both mother and baby. If not treated promptly, the mother may face hemorrhage and infection; the newborn is at high risk of diseases such as sepsis, pneumonia, neonatal infection, etc.
