Last article: Protecting dikes, preserving crops
Faced with complicated flood developments, thousands of hectares of rice are threatened, the government and people are working day and night to reinforce dikes, prevent flooding, and protect crops.
Proactive reinforcement
These days, in all the upstream communes of the Dong Thap Muoi region, everywhere you can see the government, military forces, police and local people working day and night to reinforce dikes and protect agricultural production.
In Hau Thanh commune, in recent days, floodwaters have risen due to the impact of storms and high tides, causing many areas in the dyke boxes to be flooded, with a very high risk of dyke failure, requiring urgent reinforcement to protect production. The commune People's Committee mobilized motor vehicles and people to urgently reinforce 22 weak dyke lines in 15 dyke boxes, with a total length of 22.7km, and at the same time, built 5 temporary dams at the ends of the canals in the fields to protect people's rice fields.

Nhon Ninh commune militia force braved the rain to reinforce the dike, preventing water from flooding into rice fields and residential areas.
“The water is so white that it has started to overflow in many parts of the dike. Thanks to the timely presence of the authorities, people are less worried. This year, the water level is so high, I told my children and grandchildren not to go out because it is dangerous,” said Mr. Nguyen Van Viet, a resident of Hau Thanh commune.
Vice Chairman of Hau Thanh Commune People's Committee Nguyen Thanh Kha said: The work of preventing, combating and overcoming the consequences of natural disasters is considered a common task of the entire political system. Supporting people in preventing and combating natural disasters, especially floods, not only contributes to protecting property and crops but also demonstrates the spirit of being close to the people, close to the people and for the people.
Don't be subjective.
The provincial Hydrometeorological Station continuously issued urgent notices about the rising water level of the Vam Co Dong and Vam Co Tay rivers following the high tide, reaching alert level II, and in some places exceeding alert level III. Particularly in the Ben Da River area and Dong Thap Muoi region, the water level continued to rise due to the influx of water combined with local rain. The natural disaster risk level recorded in the rivers in the province: Vam Co Dong River level 2, Vam Co Tay River level 2 and Ben Da River level 1.
Many electric pumping stations must operate day and night to pump out water leaking from outside into the dike area.
Director of the Provincial Hydrometeorological Station Nguyen Quang Ngoc said that in the next few days, the water level in the southern region is forecast to remain at a high level above alert level II before slowly receding. People and local authorities need to proactively monitor weather developments and take timely response measures to minimize damage to people and property.
Deputy Director of the Department of Agriculture and Environment Do Huu Phuong informed: The whole province is urgently reinforcing 23 key dyke locations, with a total length of more than 110km, to protect more than 11,300 hectares of rice. The dykes that need to be reinforced are concentrated in 5 communes in the Dong Thap Muoi region of the province, including: Vinh Chau, Hung Dien, Khanh Hung, Tuyen Binh and Hau Thanh. Of which, Vinh Chau commune is the largest locality with 12 dykes that need to be reinforced, with a total length of more than 80km, protecting more than 7,600 hectares of production land. The total cost of implementation is more than 6.2 billion VND, allocated from the 2025 irrigation public utility support fund. The goal is to ensure the safety of agricultural production and stabilize the lives of people in flooded areas. Up to now, the construction units have completed about 30% of the workload. Many key locations after being reinforced have basically controlled the overflow, stabilized the dike slope and toe, and limited the risk of landslides./.
| According to the Provincial Hydrometeorological Station, in the coming time, there is still a possibility of 1-3 storms affecting the Northern region. At that time, the Southwest wind in the Southern region will be strong, causing heavy rain in some areas, combined with high tides, which can easily cause flooding in many communes and wards in the province. People need to follow the forecast bulletins to promptly take proactive measures to respond and minimize damage. |
