Heavy rain can cause river levels to rise, risking flooding in low-lying areas.

According to the forecast of the Hydrometeorological Station of the Northern Delta and Midlands, due to the influence of low pressure, from now until August 19, Hanoi will have scattered showers, heavy rain and thunderstorms in some places.

The average rainfall during this period is from 10 - 30mm, in some places higher than 50mm. During thunderstorms in Hanoi, there is a possibility of tornadoes, lightning and strong gusts of wind.

In the remaining areas of the North, the hydrometeorological agency forecasts scattered showers and thunderstorms in some places, with heavy rain in some places, with rainfall of 10 - 30mm, and in some places higher than 50mm.

The hydrometeorological agency warned that Hanoi and northern provinces and cities should be on guard against flash floods on small rivers and streams, landslides on steep slopes and flooding in low-lying areas.

Since the beginning of 2024, Hanoi has recorded many periods of moderate, heavy and very heavy rain. In particular, the widespread heavy rain lasting for many days from the end of July 2024 has left serious consequences for localities along the Bui River, Tich River...

In addition to the risk of flooding due to rain in the coming days, Hanoi has also issued a document requesting localities to focus on implementing safety measures when reservoirs discharge floodwaters, especially in riverside areas.

Currently, Tuyen Quang Hydropower Reservoir is opening 1 bottom spillway gate, Thac Ba Reservoir is opening 2 surface spillways. Accordingly, the water level on the Red River is changing slowly according to the flood discharge of reservoirs in the basin.
