"Bridge" bringing population policy to the people

“Going to every alley, knocking on every door, checking every subject” to communicate and mobilize people to implement population policies is a daily, familiar job for every population collaborator. The remuneration is low, but with enthusiasm and “heart” for the job, population collaborators in the province still quietly act as a “bridge” to bring population policies to the people, contributing significantly to the overall results in population work.

To do good population work, we must be good at mass mobilization, and how to speak so that people listen is the thought of Ms. Doan Thi Viet Thanh, a population collaborator in Giai Le village, Tien Hoa commune. Ms. Thanh said: Because population collaborators are right in the community and have close relationships with people, they have the conditions to persistently propagate and mobilize people. When propagating about population policy, it is not only limited to the available knowledge of books and documents, but must have a close, easy-to-understand way of speaking in the style of "slow and steady wins the race", suitable for each subject. Before propagating, I must have a firm grasp of the list of couples of childbearing age, review each subject to have a suitable propaganda method. In addition, I apply the method of meeting them where I will mobilize and propagate there, integrating propaganda into conversations, so the propaganda is more effective. For Ms. Tran Thi Gam, a population collaborator in Ha Cat village, Quang Hung commune, after 30 years of working as a population collaborator, she has become familiar with every household in the village. Despite her old age, she is always diligent in her work of propagating and mobilizing people to implement the population policy well. Ms. Gam said: In the past, when I went to some families, due to limited awareness, some people were indifferent, but I persistently learned about the situation, skillfully understood the psychology of each person, then propagandized and mobilized with all my experience and knowledge so that people could implement the population policy well. During this time, I propagandized people about the new population policy so that people understand that giving birth and raising children well is contributing to building the future of the country; let the birth of a boy or a girl follow the natural law... to help people have awareness and take action to improve the quality of the population. Thanks to the active contributions of population collaborators like Mrs. Gam, every year nearly 90% of the village's elderly receive regular health check-ups at least once a year; 100% of children of childbearing age receive vitamin A and vaccinations as prescribed; more than 70% of couples of childbearing age use modern contraceptive methods; 100% of pregnant women receive counseling, health check-ups and tetanus vaccinations; more than 60% of pregnant women receive prenatal screening... Ms. Nguyen Thi Dung, Ha Cat village, Quang Hung commune said: Thanks to Mrs. Gam and the village's population collaborators' propaganda and sharing of experiences as a mother and wife, I have gained more knowledge to take care of the health of mother and baby. When I was pregnant, I went for prenatal check-ups and screenings. When I gave birth, I took my baby for newborn screenings and exclusively breastfed him in the first months of his life.

According to the data of the Provincial Department of Population and Children, after the province's merger, the whole province now has more than 3,900 population collaborators. The footsteps of population collaborators are imprinted in every corner of each residential area, each village, and hamlet, providing information, helping local health stations have reliable and updated data on population work. From there, advising local authorities to come up with specific, practical and effective solutions to improve population quality, health and intellectual level of the people. Comrade Pham Van Khoi, Head of the Provincial Department of Population and Children, said: Every year, the department and units working on population work in the province organize training courses to improve skills, communication methods and mobilization for the population collaborator team. In addition, providing information and knowledge on population work such as: Prenatal and newborn screening; health care for adolescents and youth; taking care of the health of the elderly; reducing gender imbalance at birth... helps the population collaborators gain more knowledge to serve their work. The population collaborators have played a key role in communication and mobilization work, gradually changing people's awareness and actions, contributing significantly to the results of the province's population work.
