Overseas Vietnamese midfielder Nguyen Hoang Nam Mi loves the football environment and the Vietnamese women's team, but she was forced to return to Canada for a year and a half to complete her university program.

Among the faces participating in the Vietnamese women's team this time, the name that attracts the most attention is overseas Vietnamese player Nguyen Hoang Nam Mi.

The Vietnamese women's team has been actively training in Hanoi since early May to prepare for two important tournaments: the 2026 Women's Asian Cup qualifiers (June 29 - July 5 in Phu Tho) and the 2025 Southeast Asian Women's Championship (August in Phu Tho and Hai Phong). Among the faces participating this time, the name that has attracted the most attention is Vietnamese-American player Nguyen Hoang Nam Mi.

Born in 2003 in Canada to Vietnamese parents, Nam Mi played for the Canadian U15 and U17 youth teams and currently plays for the University of Saskatchewan. Although this was her first call-up to the Vietnamese national team, the 21-year-old surprised everyone when she answered media interviews in fluent Vietnamese.

“I am adapting well to the new environment. The coaching staff and the teammates are very friendly, always supporting me in both daily life and training. When I don’t understand, they are willing to speak in English,” Nam Mi shared during a media meeting on the afternoon of June 3.

She also humorously mentioned the harsh summer sun in the North: “The weather is the only thing people can’t help with. In Canada, people like tanned skin, but in Vietnam, people prefer white skin, so I have to be more careful with the sun.”

Regarding her expertise, Nam Mi frankly admitted that she still has a lot to learn. She said: “The coach asked me to handle the ball faster. Vietnamese football is played skillfully and quickly, while in Canada it is often more about strength and physique.”

However, Nam Mi said she is very excited about the new challenge and wants to develop a long-term career in her parents' homeland.

Although she still has a year of university ahead of her in Canada, Nam Mi does not hide her desire to return to Vietnam to contribute after completing her studies. “I really enjoy playing football in Vietnam. There are still many people in my family here, so I always feel close and motivated,” she said.

Currently, the Vietnamese women's team continues to train physically and tactically in Hanoi. On June 8, coach Mai Duc Chung and his team will go to Japan for training, where they are expected to play friendly matches with three local women's clubs - an important preparation step towards conquering the continental arena.

Nam Mi's presence not only increases the depth of the squad but also opens up a new direction for future development of overseas Vietnamese players.
