The fire broke out in the east building of the inpatient department of Changfeng Hospital in Beijing at around 12:50 p.m. on April 18 (local time), China Daily reported. More than 71 patients in the building were evacuated.
At least 21 people died in the fire, according to China Daily .
Video of the fire shared on social media showed black smoke billowing from the building.
Some people were seen climbing out of windows using bed sheets. Others stood on air conditioning units hanging outside the windows.
"It was tragic. I could see the fire from my window. Many people were standing on the air conditioning unit at noon, some even jumped off," a witness wrote on Weibo.
Hospital fire in Beijing, at least 21 people dead
According to Dimsum Daily , the fire was extinguished at 1:33 p.m. and rescue efforts were completed at 3:30 p.m. the same day.
Chinese President Xi Jinping has ordered “all-out efforts” to treat the injured, and called on authorities to take measures to prevent similar incidents from happening again.
