In the first round of the 2025 AFC U-20 Asian Cup qualifiers, held at Lach Tray Stadium ( Hai Phong ) on September 21st, the Vietnam U-20 team did not play. The first round saw a resounding 4-0 victory for Syria U-20 over Bangladesh U-20, while Guam U-20 drew 1-1 with Bhutan U-20. Thus, Syria U-20, representing West Asia, temporarily took the top spot in Group A after the first round of matches.

In the second matchday on September 23rd, the Syrian U20 team had a bye. The Vietnamese U20 team played their opening match against Bhutan U20. Coach Hua Hien Vinh's team faced some difficulties in the first half but still held the advantage thanks to the opening goal, before exploding in the second half with four goals. The Vietnamese U20 team had a smooth start with an impressive 5-0 victory over Bhutan U20. Among them, Nguyen Cong Phuong deserves special mention. The midfielder, currently playing for the first team of The Cong Viettel in the V-League, only came on at the start of the second half but shone brightly with two assists and two goals, making a significant contribution to the Vietnamese U20 team's victory.

This victory not only secured 3 points for Vietnam U20, but also allowed Coach Hua Hien Vinh's team to spectacularly overtake Syria U20 in the standings. After two matches, both teams had 3 points, but Vietnam U20 rose to the top of Group A with a goal difference of +5, while Syria U20, with a goal difference of +4, dropped to second place.

In the other match of Group A, played on the afternoon of September 23rd, Guam U20 drew a dramatic 2-2 with Bangladesh U20. After two matches, Guam U20 is ranked 3rd in Group A with 2 points and a goal difference of 0. Bangladesh U20 is 4th with 1 point and a goal difference of -4. Bhutan U20 is currently last in Group A with 1 point and a goal difference of -5.
Vietnam U.20's next opponent is Guam U.20. This match will take place at 7 PM on September 25th.
