FPT Digital Retail Joint Stock Company (FPT Retail) will cooperate with MobiFone to provide virtual mobile network services.
A virtual mobile network license is a prerequisite forFPT Retail (FRT), the parent company of the FPT Shop chain and Long Chau pharmacy chain, to enter the telecommunications market in the near future.
Unlike traditional mobile network operators, virtual mobile network operators do not own infrastructure but provide telecommunications services by purchasing traffic wholesale from infrastructure providers and selling it retail to users. According to regulations, the regulatory authority only grants limited licenses to network operators with infrastructure, not to virtual mobile networks. Currently, there are three virtual mobile network operators operating in Vietnam: iTel (prefix 087) and Reddi (prefix 055) in partnership with Vinaphone, and Local (prefix 089) in partnership with MobiFone.
A representative from FPT Retail stated that the company will be collaborating with MobiFone. Previously, FPT Group and MobiFone had a strategic cooperation agreement aimed at enhancing business efficiency, leveraging each other's technological strengths, and contributing to the national digital transformation.
According to a representative from FPT Retail, it takes an average of 12-15 months for a mobile network to prepare its technical infrastructure. However, FRT expects to shorten this preparation time and provide services to customers sooner, leveraging its technological advantages and support from the FPT Group.
The company is also confident that it has many advantages over established virtual mobile network operators, such as owning a nationwide retail network with over 800 FPT Shop stores and nearly 1,300 Long Chau stores. Each year, FRT sells over 1.5 million smartphones/IoT devices and acts as a mobile telecommunications service provider to hundreds of thousands of customers. Furthermore, FRT is a member of the FPT Group, with relationships with many major global technology companies. Therefore, FRT aims to become a new, youthful mobile network targeting young consumers.
Besides the three existing virtual mobile network operators, the domestic market also has one entity that was granted a virtual mobile network license last April: Digilife Vietnam Digital Services Co., Ltd. (a subsidiary of VnPay ). This company's license is valid for 10 years.
