Some lakes exceed water level
Unlike the communes in the Eastern region, for more than 2 months now, the Western region of Gia Lai province has entered the peak of the rainy season in the highlands. This is the period when irrigation works and large reservoirs both store water according to the design capacity and regulate it in accordance with weather developments from now until the end of the year.
According to the forecast of the Provincial Hydrometeorological Station, this year's rainy season in the western communes will come early, creating favorable conditions for management and exploitation units of irrigation works and large reservoirs to proactively store water for production in the 2025-2026 Winter-Spring crop.
According to information from Gia Lai Irrigation Works Exploitation Company Limited, up to now, among the 17 large reservoirs managed by the unit, some reservoirs have exceeded the water level according to the design capacity through the free spillway such as: Bien Ho B, Tan Son (Bien Ho commune); Tau Dau 2 (Dak Po commune); Ia Hrung (Ia Hrung commune); Ha Ra Nam, Ha Ra Bac (Hra commune)...
The remaining reservoirs have water storage capacity of 70-90%. In addition, the water level at 28 dams has also exceeded the design spillway.

Mr. Nguyen Chi Cong - Director of Chu Pah-Ia Grai Irrigation Branch - said: The Branch is managing 3 large reservoirs including Bien Ho B, Tan Son and Ia Hrung Lake. This year, the rainy season came early and concentrated in May and June. Thanks to that, up to now, the water level at Tan Son Lake and Bien Ho B has exceeded the normal water level earlier than in 2024.
To ensure the safety of the works, since the beginning of the rainy season, the Branch has sent forces to be on duty 24/24 hours at the lakes. At the same time, proactively coordinate with communes to prepare materials and equipment for natural disaster prevention and response, ready to respond to protect irrigation works from floods safely during this year's rainy season.
Proactive solutions to protect construction works
The western region of the province currently has 352 irrigation works serving irrigation for key crops such as coffee, rice and providing domestic water in some localities.
Most of the works were built and put into use 20-30 years ago, so many items have deteriorated. Meanwhile, the limited funding for maintenance and repair has significantly affected management and operation. Therefore, proactively protecting irrigation reservoirs in the western part of the province during this year's flood season is a top priority.
Bien Ho Commune has two large irrigation lakes, including Bien Ho B and Tan Son. Currently, the water level has overflowed freely. To ensure the safety of people and property, Bien Ho Commune People's Committee has proactively coordinated with Gia Lai Irrigation Works Exploitation Company Limited to regularly inspect key locations as well as materials, machinery, rock cages and equipment for natural disaster prevention and control according to the "4 on-site" motto.
Along with that, coordinate with the Company to promptly regulate the water flow through the spillway appropriately, avoiding the risk of affecting downstream and neighboring areas; set up Zalo groups in villages and hamlets to grasp information and promptly handle situations that may occur.

In response to forecasts from professional agencies about weather developments from now until the end of the year, Gia Lai Irrigation Works Exploitation Company Limited has proactively implemented many solutions to protect works during the flood season.
Accordingly, the Company has completed the unit's Disaster Prevention and Search and Rescue Steering Committee. It has developed a plan to supplement materials, means, equipment, and tools for disaster prevention and control in 2025 such as: sacks, ropes, portable speakers, boulders, life buoys, termite chemicals, diesel oil, gasoline, generators, excavators, etc. at its affiliated branches.
Mr. Phan Phuoc Thien - Deputy Director of Gia Lai Irrigation Works Exploitation Company Limited - said: To proactively respond when floods occur at irrigation works, since the end of April 2025, the Company has coordinated with specialized agencies to inspect and evaluate the current status of large reservoir works.
In addition, closely monitor weather forecasts to promptly direct branches to inspect and handle potentially risky projects and have safety protection solutions.
In addition, all reservoirs are prepared with materials, machinery and human resources on site to be ready to mobilize when necessary. In particular, strictly implement the inter-reservoir operation process of the Ayun Ha and Ia Mla irrigation works approved by all levels and sectors to avoid flooding in downstream areas.
Regularly monitor and update data, notify early in case of emergency to people in downstream areas to proactively respond; organize forces on duty 24/7 at construction sites according to the motto "4 on-site"...
For the Ia Ring project, the unit regularly closely monitors weather developments to have timely response plans when safety risks arise. Develop a coordination regulation for natural disaster prevention and control with the Command Committee for Natural Disaster Prevention and Search and Rescue of Chu Se and Bo Ngoong communes...

“Up to this point, most of the projects managed by the Company are operating safely, the amount of water stored in the reservoirs has reached the designed capacity. In response to the forecast and warnings of the professional agencies, the Company has deployed many solutions to be ready to respond, determined to ensure that all projects can safely overcome floods during this year's rainy season,” Mr. Thien added.
