Proactively seize golden opportunities.

With the theme "Vietnamese Fruits - Delicious in All Seasons," the Vietnam Fruit Festival in Beijing, China, is scheduled to take place on September 29th and 30th. The event is jointly organized by the Ministry of Industry and Trade and the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development.

This is the first time a large-scale fruit festival has been held abroad, with the participation of numerous major Vietnamese agricultural processing and export businesses, as well as specialized agricultural associations, importers, and suppliers from China.

The festival will be held at the Xinfa Didi Agricultural Products Distribution Center in Fengtai District, Beijing. This is Beijing's largest wholesale fruit market, distributing all kinds of fruits from around the world that are officially imported into the Chinese market.

The Xinfa Didi Center serves not only the needs of over 22 million people in Beijing but also neighboring areas such as Hubei Province and Tianjin City. The center also brings together many reputable and high-demand fruit distribution businesses in China, equipped with modern cold storage infrastructure, transportation equipment, and fresh fruit preservation facilities.

The main area of the festival is the exhibition zone with 12 islands, showcasing themed products such as fruits and sweet potatoes that have been officially exported to China. In addition, another island will feature a variety of products where Vietnamese businesses can display, introduce, and offer visitors the opportunity to experience their products.

The festival is expected to be one of the important trade promotion events aimed at boosting the export of fresh fruits and vegetables and processed products derived from them that have been officially permitted for export to the Chinese market.

Also related to fruit products, on September 27th, in Guangzhou (China), within the framework of the trade promotion program at the Guangzhou International Fruit and Vegetable Industry Exhibition, under the introduction of the Vietnam Coconut Association, Ben Tre Import-Export Joint Stock Company (Betrimex) - representing the Vietnamese coconut industry - signed strategic memoranda of understanding with leading fruit and coconut organizations and associations in China. This is a significant turning point, opening up tremendous opportunities for Vietnamese fresh coconuts to conquer the market of over a billion people.

This event not only affirms Betrimex's pioneering role and proactive spirit in promoting fresh coconut exports, but also demonstrates the company's determination to seize this golden opportunity, more than a month after the Vietnamese Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development and the General Administration of Customs of China officially signed three important protocols on the export of agricultural products to the Chinese market, including fresh coconuts.

According to the strategic cooperation agreement, Betrimex will be the exclusive partner of the Jiangnan-Guangzhou Fruit Importers Association in supplying and importing fresh coconuts into the Guangzhou market, China.

Both sides are committed to close cooperation to ensure a stable supply and product quality that meets export standards. Simultaneously, they will jointly implement trade promotion, advertising, and communication activities to enhance brand recognition and expand market share for Vietnamese fresh coconuts, not only in Guangzhou but also throughout the Chinese market.

Maximize the effectiveness of the signed FTAs.

To date, Vietnam has signed 17 Protocols on the export of agricultural products to the Chinese market. Specifically for fruits, Vietnam has signed 13 Protocols covering the following items: durian, frozen durian, dragon fruit, longan, rambutan, mango, jackfruit, watermelon, banana, mangosteen, lychee, passion fruit, and fresh coconut.

For many years, China has been Vietnam's largest trading partner. The total bilateral trade between Vietnam and China accounts for approximately one-quarter of Vietnam's total import and export turnover with the world. Conversely, Vietnam is one of China's largest trading partners globally, and also its largest partner within ASEAN.

Trade relations between Vietnam and China have developed well in recent times. Particularly during the visit of General Secretary and President To Lam to China in August 2024, three protocols on quarantine of frozen durian, fresh coconut, and crocodiles were signed by both sides.

Among Vietnam's key export items to other countries, fruits and vegetables are experiencing rapid growth. According to the Vietnam Fruit and Vegetable Association, in the first nine months of 2024, fruit and vegetable exports reached nearly $5.7 billion. This is a record high, with durian alone contributing $2.5 billion. Other fruits such as dragon fruit, bananas, jackfruit, and mangoes also contributed significantly to export growth.

Among the top 10 main markets importing Vietnamese fruits and vegetables, China continues to be the largest market, with import turnover in the first eight months of the year reaching over 3 billion USD, a 36% increase compared to the same period last year. Many fruit and vegetable products and brands have a strong foothold in China and are favored by consumers, such as durian, longan, and bananas.

Despite being highly regarded for its quality and quantity, in recent years, Vietnamese fruits have largely been exported through border trade, informal channels, and directly to southern Chinese provinces bordering Vietnam, such as Guangxi and Yunnan.

Therefore, the Ministry of Industry and Trade, the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, and other relevant ministries and agencies aim to boost the export of Vietnamese fruits through official channels, combined with promoting the image and brand of the country. This is a sustainable export development method that yields higher value and penetrates deeper into the Chinese market.

According to Mr. Le Thanh Hoa, Deputy Director of the Department of Quality Processing and Market Development (Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development), organizing the Vietnam Fruit Festival in Beijing, China, will be a good opportunity for Vietnamese producers and suppliers to introduce and promote their brands and images of typical fruit products, as well as to seek customers and strengthen trade activities.

"This event will serve as a foundation and experience for organizing more regular specialized festivals in the future, not only in Beijing but also in provinces and cities in northern China, creating a premise for connecting and expanding the export of Vietnamese fruits to the Chinese market as well as neighboring countries such as the Russian Federation, Mongolia, Japan, and South Korea...", said Mr. Le Thanh Hoa.

Currently, Vietnam and China share many cooperation frameworks such as the ASEAN-China Free Trade Agreement (FTA) and the CPTPP Agreement. However, it seems that Chinese businesses are utilizing these frameworks better than their Vietnamese counterparts, as evidenced by the fact that export turnover from China to Vietnam is higher than that from Vietnam to China.

To boost exports of goods in general, and agricultural, forestry, and aquatic products in particular, to the Chinese market, Dr. Le Quoc Phuong – former Deputy Director of the Center for Industrial and Trade Information (Ministry of Industry and Trade) – believes that China is no longer an easy market. It is also a potential market that many countries want to capture, not just Vietnam.

Besides trade promotion efforts, Dr. Le Quoc Phuong recommends that Vietnamese businesses, especially those exporting agricultural products, must focus on producing products with clear origins and traceability, ensuring they meet the requirements of importing countries. Furthermore, relevant authorities should strive to negotiate for the official export of certain agricultural products to these markets. Only through official export channels can businesses legitimately enter the market and minimize risks.
