Provincial Chairman hopes Bac Lieu rice has a strong brand

Speaking at the announcement ceremony, Chairman of Bac Lieu Provincial People's Committee Pham Van Thieu requested the agricultural sector to coordinate with localities to popularize BL9 rice variety into production in accordance with current regulations. Because the Agricultural Seed Center cannot successfully promote this rice variety.

The Chairman of Bac Lieu also proposed to strengthen cooperation with companies and enterprises in building large fields to consume new products - BL9 rice variety, contributing to increasing production efficiency, bringing benefits to farmers; calling for and creating a favorable environment for companies and enterprises to invest in production, business, and cooperation to consume agricultural products in the province.

The Chairman of Bac Lieu suggested that currently there is only BL9 variety, the agricultural sector is also creating new rice varieties with the Bac Lieu brand.

Mr. Thieu emphasized: Once you have a brand, you need to communicate and promote it to businesses and consumers to see how good it is and whether production is convenient or not, thereby helping people produce in a chain to enhance the brand value, not just recognize it and then leave it there.

Bac Lieu province has nearly 59,000 hectares of rice cultivation with 2-3 crops per year, nearly 48,000 hectares of rice - shrimp, with an annual output of over 1.2 million tons, and a total production value of nearly 8,000 billion VND per year.

According to the Bac Lieu Province Agricultural Seed Center (the BL9 rice hybridization unit), BL9 rice variety has the potential for good yield, with summer-autumn and autumn-winter crops yielding 5.5-6.5 tons/ha, and winter-spring crops yielding 6.5-7.5 tons/ha, widely adaptable, and easy to cultivate.

BL9 rice is clear, less chalky, lightly fragrant, sweet and sticky, and does not dry out when cooled. In particular, through experiments at the unit, BL9 variety is able to withstand salinity at a concentration of about 4‰ in a greenhouse.

Currently, BL9 rice variety is grown on about 150 hectares in localities in Bac Lieu province and is planned to develop to about 500 hectares in the near future.

Previously, in the Mekong Delta, there was a rice variety that was specially recognized for circulation as the ST25 rice variety for the "world's best" rice product in 2019, bred by the research team of engineer Ho Quang Cua.
