Focus on labor safety in the construction industry

The work of ensuring occupational safety and hygiene (OSH) in the construction sector in Quang Tri has always been focused on by all levels, functional sectors and enterprises in the area. Fully aware of the dangers in construction, the Department of Construction of Quang Tri province annually issues directives and instructions to districts, towns, cities; investors, and construction units to strengthen the management of occupational safety and health in the area.

The focus is on requiring units to strictly implement legal regulations on labor safety and comply with technical standards and regulations. Inspection, examination and supervision of labor safety and hygiene implementation at construction sites are being stepped up, with a view to resolutely handling violations and temporarily suspending construction of projects showing signs of unsafety.

The provision of adequate safety features at the construction site such as signs, barriers, and warning systems at dangerous locations is a mandatory requirement. For projects in remote areas or linear projects, construction units must comply with regulations on warnings, dangerous zoning, and have specific technical solutions for each area such as deep excavations, areas at risk of landslides, and materials that are prone to falling. Strengthening control during construction breaks, especially during holidays, is also emphasized to prevent the risk of accidents when there are no supervisors.

Along with management solutions from the authorities, many construction enterprises in Quang Tri have proactively and seriously implemented regulations on occupational safety and health, thereby creating a safe and stable working environment for workers.

The leader of the Department of Construction said that propaganda and training to raise awareness of labor safety is not only carried out by businesses but is also a focus in the activities of the province's construction industry.

Along with that, training programs are organized for newly recruited workers and those working in heavy and dangerous jobs to ensure that workers are equipped with the necessary knowledge and skills before working.

According to the leader of the Department of Construction, occupational safety and health work does not stop at organizing propaganda and training in a certain period but needs to be maintained throughout production and business activities.

Units need to strengthen internal inspection, self-assess risks, proactively improve working conditions, and listen to workers' feedback. Departments such as supervisory engineers, safety officers, and construction team leaders need to play a proactive role in implementing preventive measures, promptly handling incidents, temporarily stopping construction when safety risks arise, and suspending workers who violate procedures for timely correction.

Workers must also be aware of their responsibilities, have the obligation to comply with safety regulations and rules, fully participate in training courses, and use personal protective equipment correctly and adequately. In addition, workers also have the right to refuse to work if they feel that working conditions are unsafe and report to the competent authority for handling according to regulations.

In addition to technical and human factors, keeping the construction site neat and clean, arranging equipment and materials properly, ensuring a safe electrical system, placing warning signs, and building fences also play an important role in minimizing the risk of accidents. Machinery and equipment must be inspected and maintained periodically, operated only by professionals and strictly following technical procedures.

In reality, when occupational safety and health are implemented seriously and synchronously, not only are workers protected, but production efficiency, construction quality, and business reputation are also improved.

From there, it contributes to building harmonious and stable labor relations, sustainable socio-economic development in the locality. With the drastic participation of management agencies, the initiative of enterprises and the cooperation of workers, occupational safety and health in the construction industry in Quang Tri will continue to be improved, becoming a solid foundation for the industry to develop safely, effectively and sustainably in the coming time.
