Local authorities are continuing to synchronously deploy disease prevention measures. Currently, the epidemic situation in Nghe An is stable, with no new infections recorded.

Information shows that after determining that 119 people had close contact with the female student with diphtheria, authorities have quarantined them to monitor their health and have a direction to handle the epidemic.

These 119 people are currently under medical quarantine at home for 14 days from the date of last contact with the patient. Those in quarantine will be monitored and their health reported daily.

According to information from the Department of Health of Bac Giang province, 8 people in close contact with patient Moong Thi Bien, 18 years old, temporarily residing in Trung Tam village, Hop Thinh commune, Hiep Hoa district, Bac Giang province (permanently residing in Pha Khao village, Pha Danh commune, Ky Son district, Nghe An province), all tested negative for diphtheria.

Previously, on July 7, 2024, the Department of Health of Bac Giang province informed that MTB patient tested positive for diphtheria.

The patient is one of two cases that had close contact with the death case due to diphtheria in Ky Son district, Nghe An province. Currently, the MTB patient was transferred by Hiep Hoa district medical center to the Central Hospital for Tropical Diseases, branch 2 in Dong Anh, Hanoi for treatment.

Regarding this case, information from Dr. Nguyen Trung Cap, Deputy Director of the Central Hospital for Tropical Diseases, said that thanks to early detection and preventive treatment, using antibiotics to kill diphtheria bacteria, the female patient in Bac Giang recovered quickly.

The patient did not experience any serious complications. At the time of admission, the patient had no clinical symptoms. On July 9, after being treated stably, the female patient was transferred to her local hospital for further isolation and monitoring.

The girl got infected after going to Nghe An to take her high school graduation exam and sharing a room with a female student who had diphtheria. The female student died on July 5. After the exam, the girl returned to Bac Giang and went to many karaoke bars.

Authorities have traced and quarantined more than 130 people who had close contact with two diphtheria cases in Nghe An and Bac Giang, and provided preventive treatment with antibiotics.

According to Dr. Cap, in recent years, the hospital has received sporadic cases of diphtheria transferred from lower levels, including patients from Ha Giang and Dien Bien.

Medical experts say that diphtheria is an acute infectious and toxic disease caused by diphtheria bacteria. The disease is common in young children, however, it can also occur in adults if they do not have immunity.

The disease is easily transmitted through the respiratory tract or through direct contact with secretions from the nasal and throat mucosa of patients or healthy carriers when coughing or sneezing; especially in crowded residential areas or places with poor hygiene conditions.

After an incubation period of 2-5 days, patients with diphtheria initially experience symptoms similar to pharyngitis such as sore throat, cough; some patients have difficulty swallowing, painful swallowing, and fever.

Most patients then gradually recover. Some patients have severe and malignant diphtheria progression. Therefore, when symptoms of suspected diphtheria appear, it is best for people to go to a medical facility for timely monitoring and treatment.

A serious complication of diphtheria is that the pseudomembrane develops rapidly, spreading down the respiratory tract, causing respiratory obstruction. Or pieces of the pseudomembrane of diphtheria can fall off, causing the patient to inhale it, causing choking and airway obstruction.

The risk of a more dangerous complication is myocarditis, because diphtheria toxin has a strong effect on the heart muscle. Patients with malignant diphtheria can lead to myocarditis, acute heart failure... More seriously, it can lead to shock, multiple organ failure, and death.

This is considered a dangerous disease, especially for those who have not been fully vaccinated or whose vaccine protection has run out, with a mortality rate of 10-20%. The mortality rate of diphtheria is much higher than that of Covid-19, but the risk of infection is much lower.

However, according to medical experts, people should not be too panicked or worried because there is a vaccine to prevent diphtheria and specific treatment drugs. Those who have been in contact with the recent case should not be too worried.

Those who have been in close contact with the patient will be given prophylactic antibiotics to kill the diphtheria bacteria immediately, both to prevent the disease from developing if they are infected and to prevent it from spreading to others.

According to information from the Ministry of Health, in recent years, the number of diphtheria cases in our country has decreased many times compared to before the implementation of expanded vaccination, from nearly 3,500 cases in 1983 to about 10 to 50 cases/year (within 15 years from 2004-2019).
