At the close of trading on the first day of August, the VN-Index fell by 24.55 points (-1.96%) to 1,226.96 points; the HNX-Index decreased by 6.13 points to 229.23 points, while the Upcom-Index lost 1.55 points to 93.52 points. Liquidity on the HoSE increased significantly compared to recent sessions, reaching over 852 million shares with a trading value exceeding 21,300 billion VND.

The market's performance today caused panic selling among investors. Investors no longer expect a strong market recovery, as a single day of sharp decline wiped out all the recovery efforts of the previous week. A series of stocks in the securities, real estate, steel, fertilizer, chemical, and food sectors fell to their floor prices.

Many investors are wondering why stocks are falling across the board despite the market not having too much bad news, and even positive news related to the second-quarter business results of listed companies; positive macroeconomic information about the country's economy in the first seven months of the year…

"Just waiting for the stocks in the portfolio to make a profit or break even before selling to collect the money" is a common mindset among many investors.

Why are the stocks of companies with profitable or loss-making business results all falling sharply? Experts at VPS Securities Company say that during this period, investors are fearful of a deep market decline, coupled with international geopolitical risks, so the psychology and behavior of investors are causing stocks, regardless of their performance or business prospects, to be heavily sold off.

Mr. Vo Kim Phung, Head of Analysis Department at BETA Securities Company, believes that the market is likely retesting the support zone of 1,200 - 1,220 points. Several recent news events could negatively impact investors, leading to defensive actions, such as the continued rise in savings interest rates, the unclear trading trends of foreign investors, geopolitical instability worldwide , and inflation…

"In any given period, the market always has stocks that outperform the average and vice versa, depending on the prospects and potential of each group of stocks in the short and long term. Investors can restructure their portfolios, accumulating shares of companies with promising growth potential and attractive valuations, with a view towards the end of 2024 and 2025," Mr. Phung said.

According to VPS Securities Company, after rising and touching the resistance level of 1,257 - 1,260 points, the VN-Index unexpectedly underwent a sharp correction, instead of fluctuating within the 1,255 - 1,260 point range.

With the market undergoing a sharp correction, investors should exercise caution, especially short-term traders, prioritizing portfolio management over new purchases. This is particularly true for investors holding a large number of stocks. Accumulating shares should only be considered by large investors and those following a long-term holding strategy.
