(Dan Tri) - After two years of being a daughter-in-law in a foreign land, the Vietnamese daughter-in-law boasts that her Korean mother-in-law takes care of her from A to Z. Ms. Huyen said she thanks life "for giving her a second family that truly loves her."
The love story started with the promise "I will come to Vietnam to visit you"
The first time she met Young Ho in Hanoi on an early autumn day in 2019, Mai Huyen was impressed by the gentle Korean guy, square face, warm voice, a bit shy and cute. At that time, she was an assistant director for aneducation company, met Young Ho through a mutual friend. She invited both of them to the office to meet and talk. Two days after that meeting, Young Ho returned to Vietnam to continue working, the two kept in touch every day by phone. Knowing that their daughter was dating a Korean guy, Mai Huyen 's family strongly objected. Her mother cried a lot because she was worried about this "special friendship". She did not want her daughter to love and marry a foreign man, move to live in a strange country. "I will come to Vietnam to visit you during Tet 2020", Young Ho said. Keeping his promise, the guy flew alone from Korea to Vietnam to visit and celebrate Tet with Huyen's family. This was also an opportunity for her to introduce her lover to her family and dispel her previous complexes. "Everyone gradually became sympathetic and agreed to this love affair," she recalled.
Young Ho and Mai Huyen's wedding in Vietnam, January 2023.
Nearly a year later, she reunited with her husband. At 5am, the Vietnamese bride landed at the Korean airport, where Young Ho's family was waiting. He and his mother gave her two bouquets of fresh flowers when they met. Arriving at her husband's house and entering the bedroom, Huyen learned that her mother-in-law had prepared everything beforehand, from personal items, shampoo, shower gel, towels... In November 2021, the couple held a wedding in Korea. Due to the complicated developments of the Covid-19 pandemic, the bride's family could not come. In January 2023, the husband's parents did not mind the hardship, flew from Korea to meet the in-laws and held a complete wedding according to Vietnamese tradition for Huyen and her husband."National mother-in-law" takes care of her daughter-in-law and grandchildren from A to Z
At first, when she was a daughter-in-law in Korea, Huyen was still confused about the cultural and lifestyle differences, the language barrier and especially the "mother-in-law and daughter-in-law" issue. She reassured herself, thinking positively that no matter where she lived, she would try to nurture her family life. "I put my trust in the man I chose to help me get used to my new life," she said. Not only Young Ho, his whole family also gave love, tolerance and generosity to the Vietnamese bride. Mrs. Bong Yul helped and taught her daughter-in-law from the smallest things to the big jobs so that she would not feel sad, miss home less and gradually stabilize her married life in Korea. Because Huyen did not know how to cook Korean food, Mrs. Bong Yul would be in charge of the kitchen, bringing food to her son's house, a 5-minute walk away, every weekend.Mother-in-law "competed" to take care of her two grandchildren so that her daughter-in-law could have more time to rest after giving birth.
When Huyen was pregnant with her first daughter, her mother-in-law paid special attention to her daughter-in-law's taste. Observing and knowing her favorite dishes, she cooked them many times. From then on, the whole family "followed" the "pregnant mother's" taste, avoiding making her smell and vomit. Knowing that her daughter-in-law "craved" Vietnamese food, Mrs. Bong Yul took the trouble to find restaurants selling Vietnamese pho and bought them. Meanwhile, Mr. Young Ho was considerate, sponsoring his wife's younger brother Huu Anh (27 years old) to go to Korea to cook his hometown's dishes for his sister. When he was busy with work, Mrs. Bong Yul took Huyen to prenatal checkups, bought maternity clothes, and told her to get plenty of rest. When she was in her 8th month of pregnancy, Mr. Young Ho and his mother started buying all the items for the pregnant woman and baby, then washed them, folded them neatly, and arranged them neatly on shelves.Ms. Mai Huyen with her mother-in-law - Mrs. Bong Yul.
In June 2022, the Vietnamese bride gave birth to her first daughter, and her husband arranged for her to be transferred to a postpartum center at an expensive cost of 60 million VND/2 weeks. "I hope my wife and children will receive the best care," said Young Ho. The day Huyen and her daughter were allowed to return home, Bong Yul moved in for 2 months to take care of her daughter-in-law and grandchild. Knowing that Huyen's cesarean section wound had not healed and she had difficulty walking, she took on all the work from taking care of the baby, cooking, to cleaning the house. Every night, she slept with her grandchild, so that her daughter-in-law had more time to rest and recover quickly after giving birth. "What kind of milk should the baby drink, what kind of diaper should she wear, what kind of towel should she use, what kind of bottle should she use, what kind of comfortable clothes should she wear, how should she sleep, what kind of pillow should she use to avoid flat head... Everything was researched and selected by her mother-in-law as the best type," she said. Mrs. Bong Yul also researched the oriental medicine hospital and told her son to take his wife to get medicine to reduce pain and improve blood circulation.Seeing her mother-in-law taking a nap with her grandchild, the Vietnamese daughter-in-law was touched and burst into tears.
In July 2023, Huyen gave birth to her second baby boy. Just like the first birth, she said she received the care, love and help of her husband's family and younger brother. This time, Young Ho took 3 months off work to spend all his time with his wife and children. He took care of Huyen for a week at the hospital, prioritizing his wife to enjoy the best postpartum services. Meanwhile, Huyen's parents-in-law and younger brother stayed home to take care of their first daughter. "The second baby was quite difficult, so the whole family had to take turns holding her. After 3 months, the baby gradually stabilized in terms of meals and sleep, and my husband went back to work. During the day, he went to the office and at night, he still helped his wife take care of the baby," she said. Thanks to her husband's family's encouragement and support, the pregnant mother's spirit was always comfortable. Huyen felt happy and lucky because her journey of raising a child was not lonely or sad."Thank you life for giving me a second family with true love"
After more than two years of being a daughter-in-law in Korea, Huyen said she was extremely grateful to her mother-in-law. Every minute and every second that Mrs. Bong Yul took care of her grandchildren and daughter-in-law were beautiful memories in her heart. There were days when the baby cried at 1-2am, she woke up to take care of the baby. Mrs. Bong Yul reassured her, "It's okay, go to sleep, let me take care of the baby. Don't worry." Looking at the image of her grandmother taking a nap next to her grandchild, the Vietnamese bride shed tears, silently thanking her mother very much because "she has worked so hard". "I married far from home, far from family, far from relatives, alone in a foreign land to be a daughter-in-law, it seems that my mother-in-law understands and loves me very much. She is truly like my second mother," she said. Looking back on the entire journey of love, marriage and childbirth, Huyen is grateful to her biological mother for agreeing to this "cross-border" love story, overcoming all distances, "in my heart, as long as you are happy, I will suppress my longing." Huyền is grateful to Mr. Young Ho for giving her a complete and loving family. The man not only loves his wife, but is also devoted to his wife's Vietnamese family; taking care of and educating their children with her. The two times she gave birth, her husband put aside all his work to take care of his wife in the hospital from A to Z, without hesitation.Small family of 4 members of Mr. Young Ho and Ms. Mai Huyen.
Huyền is grateful to her parents-in-law for loving their foreign daughter-in-law, who is "clumsy, not good at Korean, and has to learn everything about culture and lifestyle from scratch". "My parents were very tolerant and generous, considering me as their daughter to take care of, protect and love their grandchildren wholeheartedly", she said. She remembers most the moment when her daughter was sick, Mrs. Bong Yul held her grandchild, cried, and called an ambulance. She single-handedly took care of the baby until she was well and returned home, not wanting her pregnant daughter-in-law to have to go to the hospital. "My mother always works hard for herself", she said, praying that both parents will always be healthy to be happy with their children and grandchildren. "Thank life for giving me a second family in the true sense of complete love and happiness in a foreign land. Korea - a place with cold winters - but always warm with family love", Huyền said.
