What are the chances of Vietnam team participating in Asian Cup 2027?

The FIFA Appeals Committee has issued a Decision rejecting all appeals by the Football Association of Malaysia (FAM) and seven naturalized players regarding the disciplinary decision previously issued by the FIFA Disciplinary Committee.

According to the announcement from FIFA, FAM and the players were sent the Decision on November 3. The parties have 10 days to request a detailed copy of the Decision, and then have 21 days to appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS).

The Malaysian team is still allowed to play the remaining matches in the final qualifying round of the 2027 Asian Cup. However, according to AFC disciplinary regulations, the Malaysian team faces the risk of losing 0-3 in the matches against Nepal and Vietnam, due to using ineligible players.

If Malaysia is penalized for losing these two matches, they will lose 6 points. At that time, Vietnam will be awarded 3 points, leading Group F with 12 points. Malaysia will only have 6 points left.

There are only two more matches left in the 2027 Asian Cup qualifiers. Vietnam therefore only needs to avoid defeat to Laos in their away match on November 18 to secure a place in the 2027 Asian Cup finals.

If Malaysia is stripped of the right to compete in the 2027 Asian Cup qualifiers by the AFC and the results of previous matches are canceled, Vietnam will definitely have a ticket to the 2027 Asian Cup finals.

The final decision on this matter will be considered and made by AFC – the organizer of the Asian Cup – after FAM completes all relevant legal procedures.

This process is expected to last no longer than March 31, 2026, the end of the final qualifying round, to ensure there is enough basis to determine the teams that qualify for the 2027 Asian Cup finals.
