Lieutenant Colonel Nguyen Thang Long, Deputy Head of the Staff Department of the Ho Chi Minh City Police, informed that at approximately 11:30 AM on January 6th, the Hoc Mon District Police received a report about a murder and robbery at address 42/3, Group 9, Hamlet 1, Xuan Thoi Son Commune, Hoc Mon District.
Upon arriving at the scene to investigate, the police identified the victim as Ms. NTHC (31 years old, from Tien Giang province), and the stolen property included a Sh Mode motorbike and 2 million VND.
Recognizing the nature of the incident, the Ho Chi Minh City Police Department's leadership reported to the Ministry of Public Security and the City Party Committee and People's Committee of Ho Chi Minh City. They also directed the Criminal Police Department to establish a special investigation, concentrate forces and equipment, and coordinate with the Hoc Mon District Police, the Riot Police Regiment, and other relevant units to urgently investigate and apprehend the perpetrator as quickly as possible.
Through investigative measures, after only 9 hours of searching, the special task force identified the perpetrator as Nguyen Thanh Tam (27 years old, residing in Tan Phu Trung, Cu Chi district). However, Tam had moved through many places within Ho Chi Minh City and was hiding in a eucalyptus forest in Hamlet 7, Luong Hoa commune, Ben Luc district, Long An province to evade capture by the police.
Notably, the area where the suspect was hiding was vast, approximately 50 hectares, bordering a river. However, all the officers and soldiers involved in the pursuit persevered, meticulously searching every square meter, determined not to let the suspect escape.
The special task force mobilized 1,000 officers and soldiers, along with numerous modern vehicles and equipment, and police dogs. After 72 hours of searching, the task force arrested Nguyen Thanh Tam and seized all evidence related to the case.
The suspect was subsequently transferred from Long An to Ho Chi Minh City for further investigation.
Lieutenant Colonel Nguyen Thanh Hung, Head of the Criminal Police Department of Ho Chi Minh City Police, said that the suspect Tam is being sought by the police of Duc Hoa district, Long An province, for the crime of "Abusing trust to appropriate property," but the suspect has absconded.
Lieutenant Colonel Hung added that on January 6th, Tam went to a barbershop in Tan Thoi Nhi commune, Hoc Mon district, to rob it, but after determining that there wasn't much valuable property there, he abandoned the idea. Afterward, Tam went to a coffee shop along National Highway 22 and committed the murder and robbery.
Lieutenant Colonel Hung emphasized: "We determined that we had to apprehend Tam as quickly as possible, because he is a very dangerous individual. If he manages to evade capture, he will very likely continue to commit serious crimes, endangering the public."
The head of the Criminal Police Department, representing the Ho Chi Minh City Police, thanked the local people for their support in apprehending the suspect. The people provided everything from loaves of bread and firewood to keep the officers warm, to even using motorbikes to transport the officers to their mission.
Lieutenant Colonel Dai Ngoc Thang, Deputy Head of the Criminal Police Department, stated: "The victim was brutally attacked, suffering over 40 stab wounds. Initially, we only managed to contact one witness, but this person stated they only heard the sound of a vehicle leaving the coffee shop. Using professional investigative techniques, we identified the suspect as Nguyen Thanh Tam and narrowed down the search area. The suspect is currently hiding in Luong Hoa commune, Ben Luc district, Long An province."
This is a 50-hectare forest teeming with snakes and other reptiles. Once we identified the suspect hiding inside, we surrounded the entire area with 40 checkpoints, ensuring the suspect couldn't escape. On the evening of January 6th, we used sniffer dogs; later, we also deployed six drones to track the suspect.
During the pursuit, 10 officers had to be hospitalized after being stung by wasps.
Lieutenant Colonel Dai Ngoc Thang also revealed that the forces had to use heavy machinery to clear the way. "There were drones in the sky, and below were police officers, civilians, and police dogs. On the morning of January 9th, the forces at the scene used 5 excavators divided into 5 teams to advance into the forest. At that time, the suspect Tam was lying in a ditch, covering his face with grass. When he saw the excavators approaching, Tam was afraid of being crushed, so he got up and tried to run away but was apprehended."
"The suspect has admitted to all the crimes. Tam confessed that during his time in hiding, he ate guavas, bananas, and drank coconut water that he had picked in the forest," Lieutenant Colonel Hung said.
According to Lieutenant Colonel Hung, no accomplices have been found to be involved with Tam so far. The suspect's motive was to prepare weapons in advance to attack and rob victims, and to kill them if they resisted.
As previously reported, at noon on January 6th, residents heard cries for help coming from a roadside cafe on National Highway 22 in Xuan Thoi Son commune, Hoc Mon district. Upon arriving, they discovered a young man, later identified as suspect Le Thanh Tam, had escaped on a motorbike.
Upon checking inside, residents discovered the female employee of the restaurant, NTNP (22 years old), lying in critical condition with multiple stab wounds. Residents took her to the hospital for emergency treatment, but she died.
Upon receiving the report, the Hoc Mon District Police and the professional departments of the Ho Chi Minh City Police quickly investigated and identified the suspect, Le Thanh Tam, as fleeing towards Long An.
Ho Chi Minh City police, in coordination with Long An Provincial Police, set up checkpoints everywhere and tracked down Tam.
At over 10:00 AM on January 9th, the police force arrested Tam.
