"The J-League is not only a top league in Asia, but also a place that has given Phuong valuable lessons in his career," said striker Nguyen Cong Phuong about his time playing in Japan. The player born in 1995 has just become a broadcast ambassador for the J-League in Vietnam. The top professional league in Japan is where Cong Phuong once tried his luck but never got the chance to play.
Cong Phuong has become the face of the J-League.
Cong Phuong added: " The months I spent playing in Japan were challenging but also incredibly memorable. I got to experience a top-tier professional football environment where discipline, speed, and accuracy are paramount."
Every training session, every match is an opportunity to learn and develop myself. Despite the difficulties, thanks to the J-League, Phuong has matured and understood the value of perseverance and continuous effort."
Japan was Cong Phuong's first destination when he went abroad to develop his career. The striker from Nghe An province played for Mito Hollyhock in 2016, making 5 appearances in J-League 2. After a year, Cong Phuong returned to Vietnam and then continued to seek opportunities abroad at Sint Truiden (Belgium) and Incheon United (South Korea).
In 2023, Cong Phuong signed a contract for the second time with a Japanese team, this time Yokohama FC, which played in the J-League. Despite his best efforts to prove himself and compete for a playing spot, the player born in 1995 did not get to appear in the J-League before Yokohama FC was relegated.
After two seasons with Yokohama FC, Cong Phuong returned to Vietnam to play for Binh Phuoc FC in the First Division. The striker started well, scoring 4 goals. However, recent injuries have deprived Cong Phuong of opportunities to showcase his talent and earn a place back in the Vietnamese national team.
He has only recently recovered and returned to the reserve list of Binh Phuoc Club. In the March 2025 national team training camp, coach Kim Sang-sik did not call up Cong Phuong.
