(Dan Tri Newspaper) - The US Court of Appeals has approved the special prosecutor's request to temporarily halt the prosecution of President-elect Donald Trump related to the mishandling of classified documents after leaving the White House.

According to AFP , following Donald Trump's re-election last week, Special Counsel Jack Smith filed a motion with the 11th Circuit Court of Appeals on November 13, requesting a stay of prosecution against Trump until December 2. Special Counsel Smith stated that the suspension would allow the government to "assess this unprecedented situation and determine the appropriate course of action for the future in line with Justice Department policy." The Justice Department has long maintained a policy of not prosecuting a sitting president. Last week, a federal judge also granted Smith's request to temporarily suspend the lawsuit against Trump for conspiring to overturn the 2020 presidential election. Trump was re-elected amidst a number of legal troubles, including a lawsuit related to conspiring to overturn the 2020 election results and alleged mishandling of classified documents after his term ended in 2021. Trump was supposed to be convicted in July, but his lawyers requested that the sentence be dismissed, arguing that a former president is entitled to immunity from criminal prosecution.
