FBI Director Chris Wray announced on December 11 that he will resign early next year.
"In my view, this is the best way to avoid drawing this agency into deeper controversy, while also reinforcing the values and principles that are so important to how we do our work," Wray told FBI employees about his resignation during a meeting, according to Reuters.
Mr. Wray announced his intention to resign after US President-elect Donald Trump signaled his intention to fire him and nominated former Chief of Staff to the Secretary of Defense, Kash Patel, as his replacement.

It was President Trump himself, during his first term, who appointed Wray in 2017 for a 10-year term.
Wray's resignation makes him the second consecutive FBI director to leave his post because of Trump. Previously, Trump dismissed Wray's predecessor, James Comey, during his first term. Comey was fired after he expressed dissatisfaction with the FBI's investigation into alleged links between Trump's 2016 presidential campaign and Russia.
Trump and his hardline allies criticized Wray and the FBI in general after FBI agents conducted a court-approved search of Trump's Florida resort in 2022 to recover classified documents he had retained after leaving office.
President-elect Donald Trump did not win by the margin he had claimed.
That incident sparked one of two federal prosecutions that Trump faced after leaving office. Trump denied wrongdoing and described all the lawsuits against him as politically motivated.
Federal prosecutors ended their efforts after Trump won the 2024 US presidential election, citing the Justice Department 's long-standing policy of not prosecuting sitting presidents.
Trump's Republican allies have joined him in accusing the FBI of becoming politicized, even though there is no evidence that US President Joe Biden (a Democrat) interfered with the FBI's investigative processes, according to Reuters.
On the social media platform Truth Social, Trump called Wray's resignation "a great day for America." "This will end the weaponization of what has just become known as America's Ministry of Injustice. I just don't know what happened to him," Trump wrote.
