During an English lesson in class 5A at Yen Hung Primary, Secondary, and High School, a lively atmosphere filled the classroom as students discussed the topic of food. They confidently answered questions in English. This atmosphere has become commonplace at Yen Hung Primary, Secondary, and High School – one of the exemplary schools in innovating foreign language teaching and learning activities.
Ms. Vu Thi Thanh Hoa, Head of the Foreign Language Department, said: "The transformation stems from the school's bold change in methods and expansion of the environment for students to practice English daily. Accordingly, students from grades 3 to 12 learn English according to the 2018 General Education Program, combined with extracurricular activities to develop listening and speaking skills. In particular, the school has partnered with the Zika International English Center, organizing two lessons per week with foreign teachers in voluntary groups. As a result, students have developed reflexes, become more confident in conversing in English, and many have shown significant progress after each semester."
The school's foreign language teaching staff also continuously receive professional development and pedagogical training. Currently, all six English teachers have university degrees, including five with C1 certificates and one with a B2 level. One teacher has been recognized as an excellent teacher at the provincial level, and two teachers have received the title of excellent homeroom teacher at the provincial level.
“The school actively innovates its testing and evaluation methods according to international standards; builds a question bank periodically, and strengthens regular assessments to adjust teaching methods accordingly. The application of information technology is also promoted. 100% of teachers are proficient in using technology, and many online lectures and lesson plans are developed collectively on the system. The school also creates a rich environment for using foreign languages with an English club and organizes competitions in English...” - shared Nguyen Thi Phuong, Principal of Yen Hung Primary, Secondary and High School.

Similar changes are also taking place in many educational institutions throughout the province. Implementing the project to improve the quality of foreign language teaching and learning in the general education system for the period 2023-2025, Quang Ninh has deployed a comprehensive set of solutions.
Currently, the entire province has over 1,100 foreign language teachers participating in professional development courses to upgrade their skills according to the new foreign language competency framework. At the primary school level alone, 180 teachers have been trained in utilizing the electronic learning materials system; 550 English teachers have received training in applying information technology and AI in teaching. Infrastructure supporting foreign language teaching has also been significantly upgraded. Foreign language classrooms, smart classrooms, digital libraries, and a provincial question bank have been put into operation, supporting teachers in organizing more engaging and visually appealing lessons.
The education sector is also promoting innovation in testing and assessment towards an international standard approach, building question banks according to cognitive levels, and strengthening process-based assessment to adjust teaching methods accordingly. Many schools have incorporated online tests, small projects, and English presentations into periodic assessments, helping students develop comprehensive language skills.
As a result, the foreign language proficiency of students has made significant progress. At the 2025 National Foreign Language Olympiad, all contestants from Quang Ninh 's Chinese language team won awards, with 90% achieving English and 60% achieving French – the highest rates in many years. The average score for English in the 2024 high school graduation exam in Quang Ninh reached 5.75, ranking 12th out of 63 provinces and cities, continuing to be among the leading provinces nationwide.
