Long Thanh airport construction site speeds up at the end of the year

(Dan Tri Newspaper) - Contractors are mobilizing maximum human and material resources to construct and install the steel frame roof structure of the passenger terminal, runway, and connecting road to Long Thanh Airport, accelerating the progress.

In early December, at the Long Thanh Airport passenger terminal construction site, more than 6,000 engineers, supervisors, and workers were working diligently on various project components to accelerate progress. After more than 15 months of construction, in the passenger terminal construction and equipment installation package, the Vietur consortium has completed all reinforced concrete columns, beams, floor slabs, and roof columns. Currently, the contractor is continuing to construct the jet bridges, fabricate the stairwells and corridors, and erect the steel roof structure according to schedule.

Specifically, the main steel frame structure of the roof has been fabricated, manufactured, and finished with over 17,000 tons of steel, and the installation work has exceeded 11,500 tons. On the construction site, thousands of engineers and workers, along with modern equipment and machinery, are continuing to install the steel frames.

According to the Airports Corporation of Vietnam (ACV), the construction of the steel roof structure of the terminal building is valued at approximately 3.5 trillion VND, accounting for about 10% of the contract value for phase 1 of the Long Thanh airport passenger terminal project.

The steel frame structure of the passenger terminal roof at Long Thanh Airport weighs approximately 32,000 tons. The process of lifting the steel frame from the ground to the terminal roof was carried out carefully and meticulously to ensure the safety of workers and the quality of construction.

The steel roof assembly process was carried out by the consortium of contractors according to strict occupational safety standards with the support of modern equipment and machinery. All workers working at height were equipped with full protective equipment and were closely monitored for safety.

The construction and installation of the steel structure for the Long Thanh Airport passenger terminal began in August, undertaken by a consortium of contractors. It is expected that the erection of the steel roof structure for the Long Thanh Airport passenger terminal will be completed by mid-2025.

Parallel to the progress of the structural construction, all procurement and ordering of ME equipment, station equipment, HBS system, and facade glass curtain walls have been implemented, with contracts signed with suppliers and manufacturers, and are currently in the process of manufacturing and fabricating components according to the set schedule.

According to ACV, phase 1 of the Long Thanh airport project consists of four sub-projects. To date, sub-projects 1, 2, and 3 have met or exceeded the planned schedule, but sub-project 4 is behind schedule. Specifically, sub-project 3 currently has over 6,000 personnel and 2,700 pieces of equipment working day and night at the construction site. The contract packages are assessed to meet quality and progress standards.

Specifically, for component project 4 (ground service facilities), comprising 17 items, the Civil Aviation Authority of Vietnam has completed and issued the tender documents, with completion expected in Q3/2026. This project is behind schedule.

The passenger terminal project is expected to be substantially completed before December 2025, with further finishing work, equipment installation, and trial operation starting in early 2026, aiming for full completion and commissioning in the third quarter of 2026.

Package 4.6 (runway, taxiway, and aircraft parking apron construction) commenced simultaneously with the passenger terminal package, with a contract value of over 7,200 billion VND, and is expected to be completed and technically operational before April 30, 2025, 3 months ahead of schedule.

Package 6.12 (transportation system connecting T1 and T2) commenced in July 2023, with a contract value of over 2,600 billion VND. During a recent working session at the Long Thanh airport construction site, Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh requested all units to urgently accelerate the progress of the component projects, ensuring that Long Thanh International Airport is basically completed by December 31, 2025.

Long Thanh International Airport ( Dong Nai province) is a key national project with an investment of approximately US$5 billion (about VND 110 trillion). It will be the largest airport in Vietnam in the future, covering an area of ​​5,364 hectares and with a capacity of up to 100 million passengers per year. The project is divided into three construction phases: Phase 1 (2021-2025); Phase 2 (2025-2030); and Phase 3 (2035-2040).
