Thailand U22 unexpectedly sent 7 players back to their clubs while the SEA Games were underway.
The 7 players returned by coach Thawatchai Damrong-Ongtrakul to the clubs include Kakana Khamyok (Muangthong United), Thanakrit Chotimueangpak (Buriram United), Chanaphat Buaphan (BG Pathum United), Chanon Thamma (BG Pathum United), Sittha Boonla (Port Authority FC), Thanawut Phochai (Nong Bua Pitchaya FC) and Thawatchai Inprakon (Singha Chiang Rai United).
Even more noteworthy, after returning these 7 players to their respective clubs in the Thai League, the U22 Thailand team now has only 14 players. Two players who did not represent the U22 Thailand team at the SEA Games 33, despite being on the roster, are Waris Chuthong (BG Pathum United) and Seksan Ratri (Rayong FC).
Both of the aforementioned wingers are members of the Thai national team. Seksan Ratri, in particular, was elected captain of the Thai U22 team at this year's SEA Games.
The reason the Thai youth team had to send 7 players back to their clubs in the Thai League is because the Thai national championship was still being played while the SEA Games were underway.

The Southeast Asian Games are outside the FIFA competition system and fall outside the FIFA Days calendar (days when FIFA allows national teams worldwide to gather players from their clubs for international duty). Therefore, if clubs request it, the U22 Thailand team does not have the right to retain their players for the SEA Games.
Furthermore, coach Thawatchai Damrong-Ongtrakul is confident in releasing the U22 Thailand players back to their clubs this week, because in their opening match, U22 Thailand defeated U22 Timor Leste 6-1 on December 3rd.
The aforementioned result, coupled with Timor Leste's shocking 3-1 victory over Singapore last night (December 6th), gives the U22 Thailand team a significant advantage. A draw against U22 Singapore, or even a narrow defeat against the island nation on December 11th, would secure U22 Thailand the top spot in Group A and a place in the semi-finals.
