The jury of the 71st Shogakukan Manga Awards has just announced a list of 11 nominees, spanning many genres from shonen, shojo to general manga, including big names such as Dan Da Dan, Cosmos, Fall in Love, You False Angels...
Since 2023, Shogakukan has stopped dividing nominations by category as before. The awards used to be divided into Best Children's Manga, Best Shonen, Best Shojo, and Best General Manga.
The bundling increases competition, creating opportunities for many authors of different storytelling styles.
Dan Da Dan competes with excellent works
This year's nomination list includes many familiar names. The most notable is Yukinobu Tatsu's Dan Da Dan , currently published on the Shonen Jump+ platform (Shueisha). The work has resonated with the supernatural and comedy style, and is closely followed by the international manga community.
However, this year Dan Da Dan has to face experienced opponents who have had phenomenal series.

Tsutomu Takahashi's (Big Comic) manga Jumbo Max , with its distinctive noir style, brings a more mature color to the nominations list.
Keigo Shinzo's Hirayasumi (Weekly Big Comic Spirits) continues the author's tradition of subtle slice-of-life storytelling that has been his for many years.

Other nominees include Unmei no Makimodo Shi by Fūta Kimura (Monthly Coro Coro Comics) , Fall in Love, You False Angels by Coco Uzuki (Dessert), and Dekin no Mogura: The Earthbound Mole by Natsumi Eguchi (Morning) with its distinctive comedy style.
The list also includes Hi no Kamisama no Sōjinin Desu ga … by the trio Ito Asagi, Komomo Yamada, and SNC, published in Yawaraka Spirits , which revolves around a fantasy story about a fire god and a young girl chosen to be his special "servant."
The Shogakukan Manga Awards is one of the oldest awards in the Japanese manga industry, held since 1956.
This year's jury includes many prestigious figures in the Japanese publishing industry, including Genki Kawamura, Ako Shimaki, Kazuhiko Shimamoto, Kazutoshi Soyama, Shiho Takase, Bourbon Kobayashi and Taiyo Matsumoto.
