Unexpected arm pain: Contraceptive implant 'stumbled' into muscle

Vietnam - Sweden Uong Bi Hospital has received and successfully treated a 35-year-old female patient who was hospitalized due to a "lost" contraceptive implant in her arm muscle.

Patient CTL ( from Hai Duong ) reported having a contraceptive implant inserted at a private clinic about four months ago. However, recently, she can no longer feel the implant under her skin and frequently experiences pain in her left arm, especially during strenuous activity.

After examination and X-ray imaging, doctors determined that the contraceptive implant was not directly under the skin but had shifted and was lodged deep within the muscle of the left arm.

The patient was scheduled for surgery to remove the rod from their arm, avoiding the risk of damage to nerves and blood vessels.

Similarly, the Obstetrics and Family Planning Department of Nghe An Obstetrics and Pediatrics Hospital previously received and successfully treated a case of a contraceptive implant that had migrated deep into the arm muscle.

The patient, Ms. TTL (31 years old, from Nghe An), had a contraceptive implant inserted at a private clinic. When it was time to remove the implant, she couldn't feel its position on her arm as usual, so she went to the hospital for a check-up.

After examination and necessary diagnostic tests, doctors determined that the implant had migrated deep into the triceps brachii muscle. Fortunately, the patient has not experienced any dangerous complications, but early intervention is needed to avoid the risk of damage to blood vessels and nerves.

With the assistance of a C-Arm navigation system in the operating room, the team successfully administered local anesthesia and removed the implant.

Doctors at the Vietnam-Sweden Uong Bi Hospital stated that implantable contraceptive rods are a modern, safe, and highly effective method of birth control. However, this procedure must be performed by a specialist at a reputable medical facility. Incorrect insertion technique or failure to properly identify the rod's position can lead to complications such as inflammation, pain, or rod displacement, as in the case above.

Dr. Tran Van Bao, Deputy Head of the Obstetrics and Family Planning Department at Nghe An Obstetrics and Pediatrics Hospital, said that normally, the contraceptive implant can move slightly within 2cm around the insertion site, but cases of the implant moving as deeply as described above are very rare. If not treated promptly, it can cause damage to blood vessels or compress nerves, leading to weakness or paralysis of the arm.

Experts recommend that there are currently many other contraceptive methods available, such as IUDs, condoms, birth control pills, injections, or sterilization...

Each method has its own advantages and disadvantages, so women should visit medical facilities for advice and choose a solution that suits their health and circumstances.

Despite some rare risks, the contraceptive implant remains one of the most effective birth control methods available today, with a nearly 100% success rate. However, to ensure safety, women should choose reputable medical facilities for implantation and removal.

In particular, after contraceptive implant insertion, if patients experience any unusual symptoms such as pain, swelling, numbness in the arm, or inability to feel the implant, they should seek prompt medical attention at a specialized healthcare facility. Late detection can lead to the risk of blood vessel damage, nerve compression, and even limb weakness or paralysis.
