The patient, CTL ( Hai Duong ), said she had a contraceptive implant implanted at a private clinic about 4 months ago. However, recently, she has not been able to feel the implant under her skin and often feels pain in her left arm, especially when exercising vigorously.
After examination and X-ray, doctors determined that the contraceptive implant was not located directly under the skin but had moved, deep in the left arm muscle.
The patient was scheduled for surgery to remove the rod from his arm to avoid the risk of affecting nerves and blood vessels.
Similarly, previously, the Obstetrics and Family Planning Department of Nghe An Obstetrics and Pediatrics Hospital also received and successfully treated a case of a contraceptive implant moving deep into the arm muscle.
The patient is Ms. TTL (31 years old, Nghe An), who had a contraceptive implant at a private clinic. When it was time to remove the implant, she could not feel the position of the implant on her arm as usual, so she went to the hospital for a check-up.
Through examination and necessary paraclinical tests, doctors determined that the implant had moved deep into the triceps muscle of the arm. Fortunately, the patient did not experience any dangerous complications, but early intervention was needed to avoid the risk of damage to blood vessels and nerves.
With the support of a C-Arm machine positioned in the operating room, the team performed local anesthesia and successfully removed the implant.
Doctors at the Vietnam-Sweden Uong Bi Hospital said that implanting a contraceptive rod is a modern, safe and highly effective method of contraception. However, this procedure must be performed by a specialist at a reputable medical facility. Improper implantation or failure to clearly identify the position of the rod can lead to complications such as inflammation, pain or displacement of the rod as in the above case.
Dr. Tran Van Bao, deputy head of the Department of Obstetrics and Family Planning at Nghe An Obstetrics and Pediatrics Hospital, said that normally, the contraceptive implant can move slightly within 2cm around the implant site, but cases of the implant moving as deep as above are very rare. If not handled promptly, it can cause damage to blood vessels or nerve compression, leading to arm weakness.
