Under the direction of People's Physician, Professor, Doctor Nguyen Duy Anh – Director of the Central Obstetrics and Gynecology Hospital, doctors in the Gynecological Oncology Department successfully performed the first transvaginal laparoscopic surgery (vNOTES) on a patient with severe cervical dysplasia at risk of developing cervical cancer.
The patient was diagnosed with severe cervical dysplasia and was scheduled for surgery using the vNOTES technique.
The surgery was performed by Dr. Nguyen Van Thang, Head of the Gynecological Oncology Department, along with a team of surgeons, in collaboration with the anesthesia and resuscitation team led by Dr. Bach Minh Thu, Head of the Surgery, Anesthesia and Resuscitation Department.
In just 30 minutes, the doctors completed a total vaginal hysterectomy for the patient. After the surgery, the patient had no visible scars, experienced significant pain relief, reduced the risk of infection, recovered quickly, and was safely discharged after 24 hours.
Vaginal Natural Orifice Transluminal Endoscopic Surgery (vNOTES) is a new advancement in minimally invasive surgery, currently being implemented in many major centers in the US and Europe.
With the ability to leave no scars, even small ones, on the abdominal wall, vNOTES opens up a gentler, more aesthetically pleasing, and safer surgical method for patients.
Compared to conventional endoscopic techniques, vNOTES requires a very high level of surgeon expertise: a narrow surgical field, limited working space, and demands precision, meticulousness, and extensive experience in advanced endoscopic procedures.
Therefore, the successful implementation of this technique is not only a professional achievement but also a strategic breakthrough for the hospital, affirming the high-level technical expertise of the gynecological surgical team, and opening up a more modern, safe, and humane surgical approach for patients.
The success of the first vNOTES procedure at the hospital has opened new doors in the treatment of gynecological diseases, and also laid the foundation for the development of this technique for both benign and malignant conditions in the future.
