On March 26th, Dr. Chung Tan Dinh, Director of the Soc Trang Obstetrics and Pediatrics Specialty Hospital, stated that the number of children hospitalized with encephalitis has increased significantly in recent days. Specifically, since the beginning of March alone, the hospital has received 9 cases of encephalitis in children, of which 5 are currently receiving intensive care.
Accordingly, at the Pediatric Intensive Care and Toxicology Department (Soc Trang Obstetrics and Pediatrics Specialty Hospital), the medical staff are constantly busy caring for children with encephalitis. Currently, there are still 5 cases with severe symptoms requiring close monitoring and intensive treatment within the department.
Dr. Ly Quoc Trung, from the Soc Trang Obstetrics and Pediatrics Specialty Hospital, stated: The children admitted recently presented with symptoms such as dizziness, headaches, vomiting after meals that did not improve for several days, muscle aches, and high fever… After examination and tests, doctors diagnosed these cases with encephalitis, a serious condition with a high risk of death, making treatment very complex.
Specifically, HNA (8 years old, residing in Soc Trang province) experienced headaches, dizziness, vomiting after eating, and lethargy three days before being admitted to the hospital. Upon emergency treatment, doctors diagnosed her with encephalitis, respiratory failure, and pneumonia, with a severe prognosis requiring special care and mechanical ventilation.
For example, TTT (10 years old, residing in Soc Trang province) was hospitalized with symptoms of continuous high fever, muscle aches, nausea, numbness in hands and feet, shortness of breath, and urinary incontinence. Doctors diagnosed her with encephalitis accompanied by pneumonia, with a serious prognosis requiring continuous monitoring of vital signs and intensive care.
According to a report from Can Tho City Children's Hospital, from February 2024 to the present, the hospital has admitted 20 cases of children with encephalitis for treatment. Of these, 8 children have been admitted since the beginning of March, an increase of 14.3% compared to the same period last year.
